The Spar Proteas team will face a critically important three-day period in the fight for a spot in the World Netball Championship semi-finals. Previously, Proteas demonstrated superiority over Tonga in Group A match at the 2026 World Championship on Sunday.
Schedule and Match Results
In the near future, the team will meet Northern Ireland on Tuesday, followed by a potentially key game against England on Wednesday. Furthermore, a match against Australia is scheduled for Thursday, which will likely determine whether they can reach the final.
Proteas began its campaign with impressive victories over Malawi (65-44) and Tonga (96-42). While Northern Ireland started its tournament poorly, losing to Australia (75-40), and then losing to England 69-48. England, in turn, lost to Australia 66-54, making the Thursday match against Proteas extremely important for the semi-final race.
Team Preparation and Tactics
The South African squad is undefeated against Northern Ireland, including a confident victory at the 2023 World Netball Championship in Cape Town. Additionally, the team under the guidance of Jenny van Dijk is also drawing confidence from the victory over England in a series of test matches earlier this year.
This significant success was part of a carefully planned annual preparation that included trips to Australia and New Zealand, participation in the Africa Netball Cup, and a three-match preparatory series against Uganda. The victory over Tonga further highlighted the growing depth of the South African squad. Van Dijk made several changes to the starting lineup and rotated combinations during the match without disrupting Proteas' momentum.
Load Management and Game Assessment
According to Jenny van Dijk, this is also related to load management. She noted that they now have two matches, with hopes for four in total, and all of them will be against top teams, so managing the load is necessary. She emphasized that the 12-person squad exists so that everyone can contribute, which helps maintain tactical depth by allowing more freedom for changes and maintaining energy.
The Proteas coach was particularly pleased with the performance of veteran Karla Pretorius, who continued an impressive return to international netball. Van Dijk noted that in the second quarter, the players worked well, moving the ball left, right, and center. She also believes that the attacking line showed significantly better defensive work, which the team has worked on for a long time.
Furthermore, the coach confirmed that defender Sanmari Visser rested in the first two matches as part of the workload management strategy and is expected to be available for the match against Australia on Wednesday. Although the immediate focus remains on Northern Ireland, Proteas understands that the toughest challenges lie ahead, and the upcoming matches against Australia and England will be a clear indicator of whether Van Dijk's team can turn its impressive start into a place among the top four.
