Despite Orlando Pirates having formed one of the strongest squads in South African football over the last two seasons, the number nine position continued to raise questions. The arrival of Norwegian forward Sebastian Pedersen suggests that the Betway Premiership champions believe they have found the missing piece before the start of a new intense season.
Analysis of the current attacking squad
Pirates currently have three recognized central forwards: Evans Mcgopa, Yanela Mbutuma, and Boitumelo Radiopane. Each possesses a unique playing style, but last season showed why an additional striker became a necessity, not a luxury.
Mcgopa has established himself as one of Hugo Bru's strikers in the Bafana Bafana national team and remained an important figure for Pirates due to his relentless pressing, intelligent movements, and ability to stretch the opponent's defense. Nevertheless, despite often leading the attack, he failed to score double-digit goals across all tournaments.
Potential of other forwards
Mbutuma, in turn, occasionally demonstrated his potential. The young player is characterized by speed and physical strength, but lacks sharp finishing instincts in front of goal, and he also ended the campaign without reaching the 10-goal threshold. Radiopane's season was even more disappointing. This academy graduate spent much of the campaign off the field due to injury before reminding fans of his class during Pirates' pre-season tour of Spain, where he scored twice, including the winning goal against Las Palmas.
Collectively, this trio provides the team with energy, mobility, and work rate, but none of them has yet turned into a prolific goalscorer capable of consistently deciding tense matches.
How Pedersen will change the situation
This is where Pedersen can change the balance. The 27-year-old footballer built his reputation in Norway through his intelligent movement in the penalty area, timely runs between defenders, and ability to score goals requiring minimal touches. Unlike many modern forwards who prefer to drift wide or drop into midfield, Pedersen's play is focused on occupying dangerous areas where matches are decided.
This is a profile that Pirates may have been lacking. Under Abdelsalam Waddu's guidance, the 'Bucaneros' team has become one of the most dynamic attacking teams in the league. Patrick Maswanganyi, Oswin Apollos, and Tshepang Moremi constantly create chances, while the full-backs provide width to the attack and quality crosses into the box.
However, Pirates have not always had a striker whose primary instinctive reaction would simply be to finish these attacks. Therefore, Pedersen's arrival should not be seen as a lack of confidence in McGopa, Mbutuma, or Radiopane. Rather, it reflects the reality of participating in multiple tournaments.
Team requirements
Pirates are defending Betway Premiership champions, have ambitions in the CAF Champions League, and must once again fight for all domestic trophies. This demands squad depth, but more importantly, it demands goals. If Pedersen quickly adapts to South African football, Pirates may solve the one question hanging over an otherwise complete squad. For a team already capable of controlling the flow of matches and creating scoring opportunities, adding a natural finisher in the penalty area could be the difference that allows them not just to participate in the trophy race, but to dominate South African football once again.
