The Board of Directors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi as the organization's Chief Executive Officer. She will assume her duties on November 1, 2026, taking the ninth leadership position in the association and becoming the first woman to lead IATA.
Transition Period and Comments
Prior to her appointment, Zahidi served as Managing Director and was a member of the World Economic Forum's Governing Council. The current IATA CEO, Willy Walsh, will conclude his term on July 31, 2026. During the transition period, Sandrine Le Born, IATA's CFO and Senior Vice President of Corporate Services, will act as CEO.
Roberto Alvo, Chairman of the IATA Board of Directors and CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, noted that Zahidi's extensive experience at the World Economic Forum will strengthen the association's role as the global voice of airlines. According to Alvo, this appointment comes during a period of significant technological and geopolitical changes that will shape the development of world aviation.

Alvo also thanked Willy Walsh for leading the organization in the post-COVID-19 era, emphasizing that under his leadership, IATA has strengthened its position and expanded the representation of its airline members. Commenting on her appointment, Zahidi expressed deep honor at leading IATA at such a pivotal moment for the industry.
She stressed that aviation remains a vital component of the global economy, driving trade, tourism, employment, and investment. Zahidi stated that one of her main priorities will be collaboration with airlines, governments, and industry partners to advance innovation, enhance the sustainability of the aviation sector, and ensure its long-term development.
Zahidi's Experience and Education
Zahidi has worked at the World Economic Forum for over two decades, where she founded and leads the Centre for New Economy and Society. There, she also oversaw global communications, programming, and engagement with academic circles, civil society, and international organizations. Zahidi is a co-author of several WEF reports on the labor market, economic growth, and gender equality.
Furthermore, she participated in the UN Secretary-General's High-Level Group on Women's Economic Empowerment and the European Space Agency's High-Level Advisory Group. Zahidi holds degrees in economics, international relations, and public administration from Smith College, the Geneva Institute, and Harvard University. She is a citizen of Switzerland and Pakistan.
