Lando Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking McLaren's first success of the 2026 season. This achievement demonstrated that the race for the championship this year is far from decided, despite McLaren closing the gap to leaders Mercedes.
The champion's victory showcased his talent and a new level of maturity, which, combined with McLaren's quality package of updates, caused other teams to struggle on the hot Hungaroring track.
As the 2026 season transforms into a 'development war' after the summer break, three key takeaways emerged from the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Although the Ferrari car might have been the fastest on the track suited to it, the unsuccessful weekend, marked by errors and poor decisions, led Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Form suggested that the 'red' Scuderia could have taken first or second place, but complacency allowed McLaren and Norris to gain an advantage, which Red Bull capitalized on.
Team principal Fred Vasser noted: 'Not a good Sunday when you were in first or second on Friday (in practice). You expect much more.'
Hamilton received four penalties over three races, the last of which allowed the championship leader Kim Antonelli to take the podium, increasing his tally to 219 points. Currently, he leads Hamilton by 50 points after 11 of 23 races, while Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72 points in the team standings. Hamilton admitted: 'If you want to fight for the title, you cannot make such mistakes.'
Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, emphasized why Norris and McLaren should not be underestimated in the title fight. He noted that Norris's victory last year gave the young Briton confidence and maturity. Stella stated: 'Lando is much more confident. He understands much better the tools he has in driving and how to apply those tools. And I think he also... controls his emotions better.'
Since McLaren utilized the first of two major upgrades, Mercedes' early advantage has diminished, creating a three-way battle with Red Bull in close pursuit. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, admitted that rivals have closed the gap, stating: 'I am really unhappy with the large number of mistakes on our part.'
While Aston Martin celebrated the success of a comprehensive upgrade package that lifted them into the midfield, Antonelli called for significant improvement from Mercedes. As his unlucky teammate George Russell complained about another technical glitch, the 19-year-old Italian admitted that he had to fight to maintain his 50-point lead. Antonelli noted: 'Lando had the advantage this weekend, even over us. In terms of pure pace, I couldn't challenge him... I didn't expect to be in such a situation, but the car was extremely good – and there is still a lot to do. We must keep moving forward – and we need upgrades too.'
Indian athlete Bindhyarani Devi Sorokhaibam added another award to her country's growing medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by winning a bronze medal in the women's 58 kg category on Monday.
The 27-year-old athlete from Manipur lifted a total of 199 kg, splitting this result into 87 kg in the snatch and 112 kg in the clean and jerk. Thanks to this, she secured third place, behind Nigerian Rafiatu Folashade Laval (229 kg) and Canadian Anne-Sophie Tashero (215 kg).
This bronze medal is India's fifth medal in weightlifting and the sixth medal for the country overall at the Games. Previously, Bindhyarani had already been a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, earning silver in the women's 55 kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Games.
Bindhyarani Devi Sorokhaibam was born on January 27, 1999, in Imphal West, Manipur, and is one of India's most prominent female weightlifters. She attracted public attention after winning gold at the World Weightlifting Championships in Apia in 2019, after which she became a regular medalist for India in major international competitions.
Initially competing in the 55 kg category, Bindhyarani later moved to the 58 kg division following the restructuring of international weight categories. This transition was interrupted by a serious knee injury in 2023, but she returned in stronger form and established herself as one of India's leading medal contenders.
Bindhyarani's rise has been marked by consistent success in various international tournaments. She won gold at the 2019 South Asian Games, and then secured another gold at the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships. In 2021, she received a silver medal at the World Championships, and later made history at the World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent.
At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Bindhyarani won silver in the women's 55 kg category with a total lift of 202 kg (86 kg in the snatch + 116 kg in the clean and jerk), establishing herself as a leading Indian heavyweight. She later moved to the women's 58 kg category and won silver at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad with a career-best total of 206 kg (91 kg in the snatch + 115 kg in the clean and jerk).
Bindhyarani's most significant international breakthrough occurred at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships, where she won gold in the clean and jerk with a lift of 114 kg in the women's 55 kg category. Following this achievement, she won silver at the 2023 Asian Championships and then bronze in the overall standings at the IWF World Cup in Phuket in 2024. At this World Cup, she also placed second in the clean and jerk, highlighting her strength in this discipline.
Before the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Bindhyarani was considered one of India's top candidates for medals in the women's 58 kg category. She started confidently, successfully lifting 83 kg, 85 kg, and 87 kg in the snatch to secure third place after the first round. Then, the Manipuri athlete cleared 110 kg in her first clean and jerk attempt, and subsequently successfully lifted 112 kg in her second attempt. On the final attempt, she failed to lift 116 kg, resulting in a clean and jerk total of 112 kg and an overall total of 199 kg, enough for a bronze medal.
Nigerian Rafiatu Folashade Laval dominated the competition, achieving a record 220 kg with 103 kg in the snatch and 117 kg in the clean and jerk. Canadian Anne-Sophie Tashero won silver with a total of 209 kg, while Bindhyarani finished comfortably ahead of English Eliza Pratt, who scored 196 kg.
The bronze medal won by Bindhyarani Devi led to India's total medal count at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow reaching six. The Indian delegation now holds one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, with weightlifting contributing five of these six awards.
Sports watches are indispensable tools for dedicated athletes, as they collect precise data and provide vital metrics for those seeking to improve their performance in activities such as running and swimming.
The Garmin Forerunner 165 was analyzed by Olhar Digital and features an AMOLED screen, integrated GPS, and a complete set of functionalities to optimize physical exercise results. Among its specifications are the 1.2-inch AMOLED screen, side physical buttons, barometric altimeter, and integrated GPS.
The device offers advanced metrics such as wrist running dynamics (including cadence, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation), in addition to monitoring VO2 Max and recovery time. Additionally, it tracks Heart Rate Variability (HRV).
With a 1.2-inch AMOLED display, the Forerunner 165 displays vibrant colors and has high brightness, ensuring visibility even under intense sunlight. Its body is made entirely of plastic, and the strap is interchangeable according to user preference. Weighing only 39 grams, the watch is light and comfortable, even during intense workouts or at night.
In terms of resistance, the device supports water immersion up to 50 meters, allowing for safe use during swimming. Interaction with the watch can occur through the touch screen or the five side buttons, facilitating use even with sweaty hands. The 'always on' mode keeps the screen constantly lit, although this may reduce battery life depending on the chosen setting.
For physical activities, the integrated GPS allows users to leave their phone at home and track routes directly on the watch. The altimeter sensor provides accurate measurements of elevations and slopes, while the wrist reader tracks heart rate, sleep patterns, and stress levels.
Runners can benefit from specific data such as cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, and foot contact time, crucial information for refining training. The watch also correlates exercise data with heart rate during sleep, helping to determine the ideal amount of rest before the next sessions. Training plans can be customized, and all analyses are accessible via the Garmin Connect app, compatible with iOS and Android systems.
The Garmin Forerunner 165 operating system incorporates basic smartwatch functions, such as the ability to display smartphone notifications. Android users have the advantage of being able to reply to messages with pre-configured short responses, while integration with iOS is more restricted. Upon waking up, the watch presents a Morning Report containing information about sleep, body recovery status, suggested daily training load, and weather forecast.
Although the device does not have a microphone or speaker, the Music version allows storing playlists from services like Spotify and Deezer, enabling music listening during exercises with Bluetooth headphones. Health information can be checked at any time through the app for both operating systems.
In moderate use—which includes step tracking, heart rate, sleep, and receiving notifications synchronized with the phone—the Garmin Forerunner 165 battery lasts between 11 and 14 days. If the always-on display mode is activated, this autonomy drops drastically, lasting between 4 and 5 days. In intensive usage scenarios, such as a full day of outdoor training with continuous GPS on, the duration reaches approximately 19 uninterrupted hours.
If the Music version is used with connected Bluetooth headphones and music playing without interruption, the battery will last about 7 hours.
This smartwatch is considered comprehensive for demanding athletes, thanks to its advanced sensors that accurately measure parameters such as barometric altimetry and offer detailed running metrics, in addition to suggesting rest times. The high definition of the screen and dual navigation (touchscreen and physical buttons) are positive points.
However, the single-band GPS may present instability in areas with very tall buildings. Furthermore, although suitable for running and swimming, it is not recommended for triathlon practice (which combines running, cycling, and swimming).
The Garmin Forerunner 165 is ideal for those who run on public roads, go for walks, or train in gyms and wish to monitor their performance easily. It is specifically aimed at individuals who require more precise and detailed data, something conventional smartwatches do not always provide.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has shifted the team's focus to the upcoming Betway Premiership season after completing their preseason tour in Austria.
The Mamelodi Sundowns squad concluded its training camp in Austria with a match against current Algerian champions MC Alger, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. The Brazilian team returns home to prepare for the start of the Betway Premiership, finishing the tour with two draws and one loss.
In the game against MC Alger, Zinedine Ferhat scored in the 55th minute, putting Sundowns at risk of a second consecutive defeat. However, Brian Leon managed to equalize in the 74th minute, securing a draw for the team in the final match before the new season.
Earlier in the tour, Sundowns drew 1-1 with German club Hertha Berlin, followed by a 0-2 defeat to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. Although the lack of wins in three friendly matches might seem worrying, the results require deeper analysis.
Cardoso used most of the tour to assess reserve players and young members of the squad instead of relying on the main players. The camp also provided valuable opportunities for footballers aiming to make the senior squad.
Some regular players only joined the team after participating in the FIFA World Cup with the Bafana Bafana national team. Their late arrival prevented Cardoso from working with the strongest team consistently; instead, he helped the returning international players gradually return to training after an intense month in North America.
The Austrian camp also allowed the Portuguese coach to conduct tactical experiments, integrating new faces into the squad before another demanding season. Sundowns now has less than a week to gather before the competitive football begins, where they will face Marumo Gallants on Saturday (match starts at 18:00).
The team's task will not only be to improve physical fitness and complete preparatory activities. Furthermore, the squad must cope with the emotional shock following the tragic death of midfielder Jayden Adams, whose passing overshadowed the club's preparation for the new season. Balancing this grief with preparation for participation in multiple tournaments will be one of Cardoso's biggest challenges in the coming weeks.
Sundowns will once again aim to win all available major trophies, including the Betway Premiership, domestic cup competitions, and defending the CAF Champions League title.
Although victories in Austria were unattainable, the preseason fulfilled its primary function. Cardoso assessed his squad, welcomed back players who participated in the World Cup, and laid the foundation for another long season. The real test begins now, as Sundowns is expected to quickly forget the preseason results and start fighting for trophies again.
