The 2026 Men's Asian Volleyball Championship could be a decisive moment not only for the Iranian national team but also for head coach Roberto Piazzi.
Significance of the Tournament and Pressure on the Team
The tournament, scheduled for Fukuoka, Japan, from September 4 to 13, is of great importance because the continental champion will secure a coveted spot in the Olympic Games. For Iran, success at this championship could determine whether Piazzi remains in charge of the team after the current contract expires, in addition to restoring Asian dominance.
Iran enters the championship under significant pressure following an unsuccessful campaign in the FIVB Nations League. Piazzi's team finished 14th, securing only three wins in 12 matches and avoiding relegation by a narrow margin. This unsatisfactory result has led to widespread criticism and raised serious questions about the team's future strategy under the Italian coach.
Federation's Stance and Contract Terms
Despite the criticism, the President of the Iranian Volleyball Federation, Milad Taghavi, publicly supported Piazzi during the federation's general meeting in Hamadan on July 12. Taghavi stated that they fully support Piazzi, and he will remain the head coach of the national team until the 2028 Olympics, emphasizing that the success of Iranian volleyball is a priority regardless of external comments.
However, recent statements by Taghavi suggest that the federation's position may be less firm than initially assumed. On national television this week, he admitted that Piazzi's long-term future would ultimately depend on the results. He noted that there are less than two months until the Asian Championship, and hiring another foreign coach in such a short time is simply unrealistic. Taghavi added that Piazzi's current contract runs until the end of 2026, and a decision on activating an extension will be made after evaluating his work, although the initial plan was to continue cooperation until 2028.
Prospects for Participation in the Asian Games
Although Iran will also participate in the Asian Games, it is unlikely that Piazzi will lead the team there due to his club commitments. Since the Asian Games are not part of the FIVB international calendar, his presence on the Iranian bench is highly improbable. Thus, the Asian Championship has become much more than just a continental tournament; it represents a crucial test for both Iran's Olympic aspirations and Piazzi's future. The Italian coach signed an agreement that was effectively a 2+2 year deal, with an option for the federation to extend, which now may depend on Iran's performance in Fukuoka.
