It analyzed consumer confidence, saving habits, insurance behavior, and spending decisions, providing insight into how households navigate an increasingly complex economic environment.
The findings reflect both the resilience and the reality of South African consumers. Many families are making targeted financial decisions to manage challenging circumstances, yet overall confidence in the future remains low. This indicates that consumers are adapting, but doing so without sufficient financial buffers for a sense of security.
Although more than a third of respondents reported an improvement in their financial situation over the past year, 59% are unsure or only slightly confident that their financial position will improve in the next 12 months. Furthermore, 72% believe they will not be able to afford a comfortable retirement.
This data suggests that despite adapting to current economic pressures, future uncertainty continues to heavily impact household finances. Against a backdrop of unemployment exceeding 32% and rising cost of living, financial well-being increasingly depends on income stability and general economic conditions, rather than just personal budgeting.
Consumers acknowledge the importance of savings, but accessibility remains a significant obstacle. More than half of those surveyed (52%) stated they cannot afford to actively save for the future. This issue affects various income groups: 59% of respondents earning less than R10,000 per month cannot save, as can nearly half of middle and upper-middle class representatives (48% and 45% respectively). In contrast, 57% of respondents earning R40,000 or more per month actively save money.
The survey also highlighted the personal impact of financial stress. Among those whose lives have been affected by debt, 40% reported a negative impact on their mental health. When financial pressure begins to affect people's well-being, their ability to plan and feel secure, it goes beyond a mere financial issue, requiring practical knowledge and support for making informed decisions during periods of economic instability.
To counteract the rising cost of living, many consumers are forced to make tough decisions. Fifteen percent of respondents reported cutting back on or skipping meals to stretch budgets, while others mentioned delaying medical care or struggling with rent and loan payments. Most respondents describe their situation as 'just making ends meet,' especially those in lower and middle classes. Meanwhile, respondents from more affluent households were more likely to report an improvement in their financial situation over the past year. Educational expenses also place a strain on families regardless of income level: about 12% of respondents earning less than R10,000 per month struggle to pay school fees, compared to approximately 13% in higher-income groups.
Despite ongoing financial strain, insurance remains an important priority for many families. More than half (55%) of respondents stated they continue to prioritize insurance, recognizing the need to protect themselves and their loved ones from unforeseen events.
However, affordability influences consumer behavior. Approximately 29% of respondents reported canceling or reducing funeral insurance coverage, 16% did the same with property insurance, and 14% with life or health insurance. These figures illustrate the complex balance households face while trying to manage immediate financial problems and simultaneously maintain necessary financial protection.
The study also revealed differences in protection priorities across income groups: low and middle-income consumers tend to favor funeral insurance, whereas higher-income individuals place similar value on funeral and car insurance. Financial resilience is not just about having large sums of money, but about the confidence to make balanced financial decisions and understanding how to protect oneself amid limited resources. Young Black residents of South Africa often face financial difficulties because supporting family becomes an integral part of life from the moment they receive their first salary. For many, this means helping parents with household expenses or paying for the education of younger siblings. This responsibility can continue even after schooling ends while relatives search for work in a challenging labor market.
This situation is becoming increasingly common: the unemployment rate among those aged 15–34 approaches 46%. Among school leavers (matric), 33.7% remain unemployed, and 12.2% of university graduates are not formally employed. As a result, many young professionals are forced to support siblings who cannot find work, as well as care for elderly parents and contribute to the needs of the extended family.

Although South Africans are closely monitoring this week's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, for many families, financial anxiety is related not so much to interest rates as to how they manage to make ends meet each month. This shift is the central finding of the DebtBusters study.
The survey showed that concerns about inflation rose by 28% over the past year, and anxiety about electricity costs almost doubled, increasing by 99%. Economists expect annual inflation to rise from 4.5% in May to between 4.6% and 4.7%, largely driven by rising fuel prices.
Regarding the MPC decision, which will be announced on Thursday, economists are divided on whether the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will maintain current rates or raise them. Bianca Bothes, Managing Director of Citadel Global, believes that the rand's stability, improved fiscal performance, and ongoing structural reforms support keeping rates unchanged. She noted that 'the hawkish stance of SARB Governor Lesetji Mangope allows for further tightening if inflationary pressure persists.'
Mike van der Weshuizen, Portfolio Manager at CAM Asset Management, stated that lower oil prices and a stronger rand have eased some inflationary pressure, but geopolitical tension remains a risk. He sees nearly two-thirds probability of a rate hike or at least a tougher tone from Mangope. Annabel Bishop, Chief Economist at Investec, believes that new inflation risks could justify another hike, arguing that 'SARB may decide that another preemptive increase is necessary in July, given the jump in inflation expectations.'
Harry Scherzer, CEO of Future Forex, noted that the MPC faces a delicate decision as economists diverge on whether to raise or hold rates. The current base rate stands at 10.5%.
Regardless of the MPC's decision, DebtBusters data indicates that consumers are worried about more than just interest rates. DebtBusters head, Benay Seiger, emphasized: 'Interest rates are no longer the main concern for consumers. The dominant source of worry has become the rising cost of living.'
DebtBusters notes that the dominant source of anxiety has changed every year: inflation in 2022, interest rates in 2023, debt obligations in 2024, short-term stabilization in 2025, and cost of living in 2026. However, it remains constant that short-term financial survival is displacing long-term planning for the vast majority of South Africans.
Overall, 72% of respondents reported experiencing financial stress, and 42% stated that financial pressure affects home life—this is the highest figure since the five-year survey began. Seiger added that despite persistently high borrowing costs, consumers are increasingly facing a combination of rising food prices, electricity tariffs, transport costs, and municipal fees, which continues to strain already tight household budgets.
Electricity has become one of the fastest-growing causes of financial anxiety. The near doubling of concern over electricity costs reflects not only tariff increases but also the broader impact of higher energy costs on utility bills and prices of goods and services across the economy. For many families, these are unavoidable monthly expenses that cannot be easily cut.
More than half of the 18,000 respondents stated that they spend over 40% of their net income servicing debt, which is higher than 48% the previous year. DebtBusters points out that when debt repayment consumes over 40% of net income, households have little room to cover unexpected expenses or price increases without cutting spending in other areas.
These findings confirm warnings issued in recent weeks by debt advisors. The National Association of Debt Counsellors reported that many consumers now have little or nothing left to save after covering debt payments and essential living expenses, making them increasingly vulnerable even to moderate increases in the cost of living.
This changing financial reality is reflected throughout the survey, as financial strain is also having a growing emotional impact. Clinical psychologist Andrea Du Plessis stated that financial stress has ceased to be an occasional problem. She noted: 'Financial stress is no longer an isolated challenge—it has become a constant psychological state.'
Du Plessis also stressed that the impact extends far beyond personal finances. She said: 'When we carry this into the home, which should be our sanctuary, our safe space, then we have no safe place.'
Results among consumers who do not undergo debt counselling show that they are becoming more willing to seek help before their financial situation deteriorates. DebtBusters found that the proportion of respondents willing to consider debt counselling increased from 36% last year to 40% this year. This rise aligns with reports from debt counsellors, as consumers are seeking help not because of a single financial shock, but because years of rising living costs have gradually eroded their disposable income.
