What is consumed in the morning can directly impact the feeling of satiety, gut health, and even the weight loss process. A study published in February in the British Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that meals rich in protein help control hunger throughout the day, while those with higher fiber content promote benefits for the digestive tract.
Clinical Trial Methodology
In a clinical trial, 19 individuals participated in two dietary regimens focused on weight loss, each for a period of 28 days. Participants received all meals provided by the researchers. One protocol contained approximately 30 grams of daily fiber, obtained from foods such as lentils, fava beans, and wheat bran. The other regimen ensured that 30% of calories came from protein sources, such as dairy products, eggs, and meat.
In both dietary plans, 45% of daily caloric intake was allocated to breakfast, 35% to lunch, and 20% to dinner.
Different Weight Loss Mechanisms
The results indicated positive effects on weight reduction in both types of breakfast, although through distinct mechanisms. The protein-based diet resulted in less appetite during the day. The high-fiber diet, on the other hand, stimulated beneficial bacteria in the intestine, such as bifidobacteria, which are linked to intestinal barrier integrity and the reduction of low-grade inflammation, in addition to promoting butyrate, associated with improved insulin sensitivity.
This suggests that proteins and fibers work complementarily. Proteins increase satiety by stimulating hormones that reduce hunger, which tends to decrease overall calorie consumption. In turn, fibers, especially fermentable ones, regulate the gut microbiota and favor the production of substances linked to metabolic health.
Expert Analysis and Recommendations
Lilian Curvello, a gastroenterologist at Einstein Israelite Hospital, commented that the slight advantage observed in weight loss with the high-fiber diet may be related to this more comprehensive impact on metabolism, including improved insulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation.
Curvello also suggested that a combination of about 20 to 30 grams of protein at breakfast, along with good sources of fiber, can help maintain satiety, stabilize glucose levels, and benefit intestinal function.
Study Limitations
It is important to note that the findings should be analyzed with caution. The study was limited in the number of participants and lasted only 28 days, which restricts the ability to assess the maintenance of these effects in the long term. Additionally, the foods used do not exactly correspond to people's daily eating habits nor are they consumed in the same quantities.
The gastroenterologist from Einstein emphasized that the sample evaluated was very specific, consisting of overweight adults, which prevents generalizing the results to other profiles. Thus, although the findings make physiological sense, they should be seen as indicators of possibilities, not as definitive guidance.
