Amid high inflation and significant infrastructure damage, the Iranian government has warned about the necessity of raising heavily subsidized gasoline prices.
The issue of fuel price changes is extremely sensitive for the Iranian population. When the government raised fuel prices by 50% in 2019, it sparked nationwide protests that escalated into broader anti-government unrest, followed by a harsh crackdown by security services and internet shutdowns.
According to government representative Fatemeh Mohajerani, changing gasoline prices or introducing fuel rationing is inevitable. She stated on Iranian state television on Saturday that strategies exist to manage gasoline consumption, given that the government naturally subsidizes the sale price of fuel to the public.
Mohajerani added that a solution must be found to balance gasoline consumption. She assured the public that a decision regarding changes in quotas or prices would be made, and that this would be communicated carefully, transparently, clearly, and honestly.
Currently, gasoline in Iran is sold at three different tariffs. Last December, the government introduced a higher rate for drivers consuming more than 160 liters (42 gallons) of gasoline monthly.
The head of Iran's state fuel distribution company also warned of potential shortages during an interview on Sunday. Mohammad Sadeghi Azimfar, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, noted that if high fuel consumption continues and production and import restrictions persist due to facility damage, 'measures may need to be taken to maintain the stability of fuel supplies and the country's energy security.'
Speaking to Khabaronline, Azimfar acknowledged the delicacy of the issue. He emphasized that the government will not 'catch people off guard' regarding gasoline. He also assured that any decision made will first be announced publicly, public opinion will be considered, and only then will implementation begin.
Oil prices rose to a level not seen in a month, which occurred against the backdrop of renewed military clashes between the United States and Iran.
