The South African team's campaign at the Commonwealth Games is gaining momentum on Friday as athletes compete in seven sports. However, the greatest hopes for securing the first medals are expected during the evening sessions in the pool.
Start of the campaign and swimming
After the tournament opened on Thursday with a lawn bowls match, where Wayne Rittmuller won the men's singles event and the women's pair lost, activity has significantly increased. Competitions now include swimmers, boxers, gymnasts, para-athletes, and wheelchair basketball players.
Center stage will be Peter Kotsze, the world champion, who begins his quest for Commonwealth medals in the men's 50-meter backstroke. The reigning world champion in the 100-meter backstroke is expected to pass the morning preliminaries without issue to return for the semi-finals in the evening. His teammate Ruard van Renen also aims to advance.
Pool competitions
In the women's 50-meter butterfly, a strong South African delegation is led by Erin Gallagher, a Commonwealth medalist, as part of a trio that includes Caitlin de Lange and Jessica Thompson. Gallagher is considered one of the favorites to qualify for the evening semi-finals.
The men's 100-meter breaststroke promises an exciting confrontation, as experienced athletes Michael Holey and Chris Smith aim to get through the preliminaries before participating in the semi-finals later that same day. The evening session could also be an opportunity for South Africa to win its first medals of the Games. Chris Mikhailov is targeting a spot in the men's 200-meter individual medley final, while Hannah Robertson and Dune Kotsze will fight for qualification in the women's 400-meter freestyle final. Hannah Pierce also hopes to compete in the women's 200-meter backstroke final, and the South African men's and women's 4x100-meter freestyle relays will strive for the podium if they advance.
Para-sports and other disciplines
Paracycling competitions have also begun: Nathan Hendrix competes in the men's S13 100-meter freestyle swim, while Alani Ferreira and Danika Winke prepare for the women's S13 100-meter freestyle swim. All three hope to make it into the respective evening finals.
Outside the pool, Simamkele Demesi has started South Africa's boxing campaign, fighting Ziggy Agate from Mauritius in the men's 65 kg division round of 32. Meanwhile, Daniel Maclin has begun his challenge in artistic gymnastics during the qualifying rounds.
On the green fields, Rittmuller will try to continue his successful start in the men's singles against Mitchell Graham from Norfolk, and Jacqueline Jansen van Rensberg and Elina Mvuhango continue their campaign in the women's pair against India. Princess Schroeder and Kit Orrell have also started their para-lawn bowling campaign with group matches against Scotland and Australia. The women of the South African team will conclude the daytime program on the basketball court, meeting Canada in their first 3x3 wheelchair basketball match.
Although medals may be scarce outside the pool on Friday, a strong start in the water will provide an ideal foundation for the South African team's campaign at the Commonwealth Games over the weekend.
