The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its consistent and clear stance on economic and trade issues between China and the United States on Friday. Specifically, it was emphasized that tariff disputes and trade wars run counter to the interests of all involved parties.
State Councilor Li Jian stated during a regular press briefing that China opposes any unilateral measures to impose tariffs.
These comments came after the United States announced on Thursday its intention to impose duties on imported goods from 60 economies. According to the US statement, these tariffs will range from 10 to 12.5% and will take effect on Friday, citing Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
A representative of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Wednesday that Beijing strongly objects to the imposition of unilateral sanctions that are not supported by international law or have not received approval from the UN Security Council.
The remarks by representative Lin Jian were made during a daily press briefing. He commented on the new United States legislation concerning sanctions against Russia, which was initiated by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
These new measures target the five largest buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, among whom China is included. Lin emphasized that China will take all necessary steps to firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens and enterprises.
He added that the application of double standards, as well as the use of coercion and pressure, will ultimately be counterproductive.
