After five years of use, many electric vehicles retain up to 95% of their initial range. This data contradicts the expectations set at the beginning of this technology's popularization, indicating that one of the main consumer concerns has weakened in recent years.
At the beginning of electric cars entering the market, battery longevity was a source of great distrust. Part of this negative perception was associated with the Nissan Leaf, launched in 2010 without a battery cooling system, which gained notoriety for rapid range loss. This fueled the belief that component replacement would be necessary in the short term.
According to the company Recurrent, between 2011 and 2016, approximately 8.5% of electric cars required a complete battery replacement. However, the landscape has changed drastically; in models manufactured from 2022 onwards, only 0.3% faced this need, and most still retain up to 95% of their original range after five years of use.
Experts point out that the improvement is not due to a single element. Viet Nguyen-Tien, a researcher at the London School of Economics, identified three crucial factors for this evolution: the more sophisticated chemistry of the batteries, the implementation of intelligent management systems, and more effective thermal control.
Additionally, a BloombergNEF report revealed that the cost of these components has plummeted by over 90% since 2010. Another significant change was the feasibility of replacing only damaged cells in various models, which avoids complete battery replacement.
Usage data supports this conclusion. Geotab analyzed over 22,700 electric vehicles and found that current batteries lose, on average, only 2.3% of their capacity annually. Maintaining this pace, they have the potential to operate for more than two decades.
Researchers at the SLAC-Stanford Battery Center also concluded that simulations based on daily driving increase battery life by up to 38% compared to conventional tests. Conditions such as stop-and-go traffic, vigorous acceleration, regenerative braking, and periods of rest contribute to better cell preservation. The study emphasizes that laboratory tests cannot fully replicate how vehicles are used daily.

The National River Linking Project (NRLP), conceived to address water scarcity by connecting surplus rivers with deficit ones, potentially risks the spread of invasive alien species.
According to a new study, these artificial waterways threaten to bypass ancient natural barriers, allowing aggressive non-native plants, fish, and animals to colonize and potentially destroy some of the planet's most diverse freshwater ecosystems.
Scientists from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) studied how the proposed network of 15,000 kilometers of canals and 3,000 reservoirs will alter India's biological landscape. They found that areas the government intends to protect, such as biodiversity hotspots including Krishna, Godavari, and the Western Ghats, are most vulnerable to these biological invasions. By connecting these basins, the project could facilitate the migration of 15 known invasive species into previously isolated habitats.
Among the 15 studied invasive species are various plants, such as water hyacinth and water lettuce; fish, like the African catfish, common carp, guppy, and sucker catfish; mollusks, including the sharp-shelled snail; and one reptile, the red-eared slider turtle. Researchers applied a species distribution modeling method. They mapped the current locations of 15 naturalized invasive species and used climate data to predict their survival sites if movement were possible. When overlaying these suitability maps onto the proposed river linking project routes, the results showed a significant overlap. A strong positive correlation was identified, meaning that river basins rich in native species are also the most attractive environments for invaders. Thus, India's most valuable biodiversity hotspots, instead of being resistant to newcomers, actually represent invasion foci ready to occur.
The study highlights a gap in policy and provides an accurate assessment of the biological cost of connectivity. Unlike earlier works warning of human displacement or forest loss, this research presents the first spatially detailed framework of how biotic homogenization—the process of unique local species being replaced by the same few widespread invaders—could develop across the subcontinent. Freshwater ecosystems cover less than 3% of the Earth's surface but support 10% of all known species, yet they are disappearing three times faster than forests. Scientific approaches are being applied in the National Park of Tigers and Leopards in Northeast China to protect wild animals. Zhang Yan, deputy director of the research center at the park's management and protection center, recorded animal tracks, noting: 'The soil is soft, the print is fresh, and the pad is about 9 centimeters wide. This must be a female Siberian tiger.'
Hunchun, a border town in Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, Northeast China, is located in the heart of the park. Since the park was launched as a pilot project in 2017, the team at the Hunchun management and protection center has been conducting regular field patrols and scientific research to conserve fauna using evidence-based methods.
Patrolling is central to the center's work. Hundreds of patrol officers and local ecological rangers, many hired from nearby villages, monitor the forest and record the movements of wild animals. Hao Ruiping, deputy head of the center's protection department, noted that patrols help understand what is happening in the mountains and track animal routes. He added that ground checks are necessary even when infrared cameras are available.
Previously, patrols focused on detecting snares and traps, which were difficult to spot under fallen autumn leaves. However, due to increased awareness among local residents about nature conservation, the work has shifted towards maintaining infrared cameras and collecting biological samples, resulting in traps being encountered much less frequently.
Each patrol officer carries a backpack weighing about 5 kilograms, equipped with signal flares, an intercom, a air horn, infrared cameras, and other gear that Hao called a 'universal backpack.' Patrols are now conducted in groups of five people. Before setting out, they check the integrated space-air-ground monitoring system to see where animals have recently been sighted, allowing them to plan safer routes.
At the management and protection center, staff, including Duan Lianru, use this system on computers, viewing real-time video feeds from infrared cameras installed throughout the park to record tigers and leopards. This system covers the entire park, integrating digital technology and ensuring 24-hour monitoring, becoming a key source of data for tracking the movements and growth of Siberian tigers and Amur leopards.
Duan compared the process to observing a growing child, periodically photographing the same tiger to see changes. She explained that individual tigers are identified by their unique and permanent stripe patterns, although distinguishing animals with such complex markings requires careful frame-by-frame comparison. Duan also mentioned that the collected data helps researchers study the territory and diet of the animals. Previously, Duan helped warn nearby villages about the appearance of tigers or leopards near settlements.
Zhang, along with patrol officers, would find an infrared camera mounted on a tree trunk, quickly change the battery, and review the recordings on his phone. Zhang has worked in these mountains for 16 years. He transitioned from forestry to wildlife protection after China ceased commercial logging of natural forests in key state forests in the region.
Zhang emphasized that grassroots work involves utilizing local proximity, maintaining infrared cameras, measuring population density, studying diseases, and tracking the movements of tigers and leopards. During one ungulate survey, he covered a route of 8 square kilometers daily to collect data. This work has shown an increase in animal numbers, indicating the return and establishment of more wildlife in Hunchun.
Today, in the vast forest, Siberian tigers and Amur leopards live undisturbed; noble deer and Siberian roe deer are often seen, as are rare species such as the Siberian musk deer, sable, and lynx. Zhang concluded that protecting these tigers and leopards is not only about caring for the animals themselves but also for the entire ecosystem they represent. In his free time, he gives lectures in local schools, striving to inspire the next generation of conservationists, asserting that protecting Siberian tigers and Amur leopards is protecting their own home.
The central government reviewed the measures taken by the Haryana government to address the air pollution problem in the Delhi-NCR region. The necessity for 'accelerated implementation, better inter-departmental coordination, and strict adherence to rules' was emphasized to ensure a significant reduction in pollution levels before the winter season, when stubble burning and meteorological conditions increase pollutant concentrations.
At the meeting, chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav in Gurugram, Haryana's action plan to combat air pollution was discussed in detail. Special attention was paid to issues of outdated waste, road dust, industrial pollution, and strengthening infrastructure for the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles.
Minister Yadav stressed the urgency of taking measures, stating that 'the window until the winter season must be fully utilized to implement pollution control measures in mission mode. Timely execution, effective coordination, and strict compliance with rules will be crucial for achieving visible improvements in air quality in Delhi-NCR.' Regarding the critical issue of stubble burning, which annually increases pollutant levels in Delhi-NCR during winter, Yadav urged the state government to address gaps in the procurement of crop residue management (CRM) equipment and expedite the creation of custom rental centers.
He also highlighted the need for intensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns and training programs for farmers to promote the effective use of CRM equipment. It was suggested that local elected representatives, in conjunction with Gram Panchayats, identify stubble burning hotspots, while circle collectors survey industrial units, documenting their capacity for storing and utilizing crop residues to optimize supply and demand.
According to the Ministry of Environment, state authorities were also instructed to ensure adequate availability of balers for crop residues. The Minister also reviewed the progress on construction and demolition waste management and demanded the acceleration of the establishment of Secondary Collection Centers for such waste. Furthermore, it was noted that the clearance of outdated waste must be conducted in an emergency mode.
Concerning Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and biomass burning, Yadav called for the creation of special target groups and insisted on achieving 100% collection of MSW and biomass to prevent disorder and open burning.
On the issue of End-of-Life (EoL) vehicles, Yadav requested the authorities to expedite the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOC) for transporting relevant EoL vehicles outside the NCR, while encouraging the scientific scrapping of old and unusable vehicles. He also called for faster replacement of old polluting vehicles with electric vehicles under the 'Parivartan' program.
Additionally, an official statement reported that the minister requested the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at all fuel stations for the effective implementation of the 'No PUCC – No Fuel' initiative. Emphasizing the need to improve urban traffic management, Yadav asked the authorities to identify traffic congestion bottlenecks in mission mode and implement appropriate mitigation measures as soon as possible.
When reviewing measures to control industrial pollution, Yadav insisted on the accelerated installation of Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) and Air Pollution Control Devices (APCD) at all industrial facilities.
