One crew member suffered an ankle fracture while shielding another team member from hyenas. Numerous rhinos were also spotted, and many participants had never before felt the ground shake from a rhino's passage.
Despite the constant physical dangers, the environment provided moments of surreal beauty, which, in Story's opinion, are only possible in one place on Earth. He often told the participants they needed to 'embrace their inner eight-year-old,' as they walked naked in the wilderness past rhinos and giraffes illuminated by the full moon. He concluded that such sights can only be seen in Africa and only in their show.
After many years of using group dynamics in spin-offs like 'Naked and Afraid XL', producers sought a fresh format to challenge the franchise veterans and test new international participants.
