Ecological Police Identified 48 Violations of Environmental Legislation During Waste Removal in Tashkent and Region

Scientific approaches are being applied in the National Park of Tigers and Leopards in Northeast China to protect wild animals. Zhang Yan, deputy director of the research center at the park's management and protection center, recorded animal tracks, noting: 'The soil is soft, the print is fresh, and the pad is about 9 centimeters wide. This must be a female Siberian tiger.'

Park Management Center Operations

Hunchun, a border town in Yanbian Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province, Northeast China, is located in the heart of the park. Since the park was launched as a pilot project in 2017, the team at the Hunchun management and protection center has been conducting regular field patrols and scientific research to conserve fauna using evidence-based methods.

Patrolling and Monitoring Methods

Patrolling is central to the center's work. Hundreds of patrol officers and local ecological rangers, many hired from nearby villages, monitor the forest and record the movements of wild animals. Hao Ruiping, deputy head of the center's protection department, noted that patrols help understand what is happening in the mountains and track animal routes. He added that ground checks are necessary even when infrared cameras are available.

Previously, patrols focused on detecting snares and traps, which were difficult to spot under fallen autumn leaves. However, due to increased awareness among local residents about nature conservation, the work has shifted towards maintaining infrared cameras and collecting biological samples, resulting in traps being encountered much less frequently.

Animal Tracking Technologies

Each patrol officer carries a backpack weighing about 5 kilograms, equipped with signal flares, an intercom, a air horn, infrared cameras, and other gear that Hao called a 'universal backpack.' Patrols are now conducted in groups of five people. Before setting out, they check the integrated space-air-ground monitoring system to see where animals have recently been sighted, allowing them to plan safer routes.

At the management and protection center, staff, including Duan Lianru, use this system on computers, viewing real-time video feeds from infrared cameras installed throughout the park to record tigers and leopards. This system covers the entire park, integrating digital technology and ensuring 24-hour monitoring, becoming a key source of data for tracking the movements and growth of Siberian tigers and Amur leopards.

Ecosystem Identification and Study

Duan compared the process to observing a growing child, periodically photographing the same tiger to see changes. She explained that individual tigers are identified by their unique and permanent stripe patterns, although distinguishing animals with such complex markings requires careful frame-by-frame comparison. Duan also mentioned that the collected data helps researchers study the territory and diet of the animals. Previously, Duan helped warn nearby villages about the appearance of tigers or leopards near settlements.

Zhang, along with patrol officers, would find an infrared camera mounted on a tree trunk, quickly change the battery, and review the recordings on his phone. Zhang has worked in these mountains for 16 years. He transitioned from forestry to wildlife protection after China ceased commercial logging of natural forests in key state forests in the region.

Zhang emphasized that grassroots work involves utilizing local proximity, maintaining infrared cameras, measuring population density, studying diseases, and tracking the movements of tigers and leopards. During one ungulate survey, he covered a route of 8 square kilometers daily to collect data. This work has shown an increase in animal numbers, indicating the return and establishment of more wildlife in Hunchun.

Today, in the vast forest, Siberian tigers and Amur leopards live undisturbed; noble deer and Siberian roe deer are often seen, as are rare species such as the Siberian musk deer, sable, and lynx. Zhang concluded that protecting these tigers and leopards is not only about caring for the animals themselves but also for the entire ecosystem they represent. In his free time, he gives lectures in local schools, striving to inspire the next generation of conservationists, asserting that protecting Siberian tigers and Amur leopards is protecting their own home.

The central government reviewed the measures taken by the Haryana government to address the air pollution problem in the Delhi-NCR region. The necessity for 'accelerated implementation, better inter-departmental coordination, and strict adherence to rules' was emphasized to ensure a significant reduction in pollution levels before the winter season, when stubble burning and meteorological conditions increase pollutant concentrations.

Discussion of the action plan

At the meeting, chaired by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav in Gurugram, Haryana's action plan to combat air pollution was discussed in detail. Special attention was paid to issues of outdated waste, road dust, industrial pollution, and strengthening infrastructure for the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles.

Requirements for stubble burning control

Minister Yadav stressed the urgency of taking measures, stating that 'the window until the winter season must be fully utilized to implement pollution control measures in mission mode. Timely execution, effective coordination, and strict compliance with rules will be crucial for achieving visible improvements in air quality in Delhi-NCR.' Regarding the critical issue of stubble burning, which annually increases pollutant levels in Delhi-NCR during winter, Yadav urged the state government to address gaps in the procurement of crop residue management (CRM) equipment and expedite the creation of custom rental centers.

Waste and transport management measures

He also highlighted the need for intensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns and training programs for farmers to promote the effective use of CRM equipment. It was suggested that local elected representatives, in conjunction with Gram Panchayats, identify stubble burning hotspots, while circle collectors survey industrial units, documenting their capacity for storing and utilizing crop residues to optimize supply and demand.

According to the Ministry of Environment, state authorities were also instructed to ensure adequate availability of balers for crop residues. The Minister also reviewed the progress on construction and demolition waste management and demanded the acceleration of the establishment of Secondary Collection Centers for such waste. Furthermore, it was noted that the clearance of outdated waste must be conducted in an emergency mode.

Concerning Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and biomass burning, Yadav called for the creation of special target groups and insisted on achieving 100% collection of MSW and biomass to prevent disorder and open burning.

Transport and industry regulation

On the issue of End-of-Life (EoL) vehicles, Yadav requested the authorities to expedite the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOC) for transporting relevant EoL vehicles outside the NCR, while encouraging the scientific scrapping of old and unusable vehicles. He also called for faster replacement of old polluting vehicles with electric vehicles under the 'Parivartan' program.

Additionally, an official statement reported that the minister requested the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at all fuel stations for the effective implementation of the 'No PUCC – No Fuel' initiative. Emphasizing the need to improve urban traffic management, Yadav asked the authorities to identify traffic congestion bottlenecks in mission mode and implement appropriate mitigation measures as soon as possible.

When reviewing measures to control industrial pollution, Yadav insisted on the accelerated installation of Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) and Air Pollution Control Devices (APCD) at all industrial facilities.

Paleontologists have discovered and described a new species of stem snake that inhabited the territory of modern-day Brazil during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 75–85 million years ago. This species has been named Tametara mirim. Researchers believe that this ancient reptile reached a length of about 40 centimeters, and based on the analysis of its skull structure, brain, and inner ear, it led an underground, fossorial lifestyle.

Evolutionary Significance of the Discovery

The discovery of T. mirim highlights that stem snakes possessed significant diversity in terms of both anatomy and ecology. Although current reconstructions suggest that snakes evolved from lizards no later than the end of the Jurassic period, the first clear representatives of this group in the fossil record only appear in the Early Late Cretaceous, leaving the mechanism of their origin open to question.

Hypotheses on Snake Origins

The most common theory suggests that the direct ancestors of snakes lived in sand or forest litter, foraging for invertebrates. The transition to a fossorial lifestyle was accompanied by several morphological changes, including the loss of limbs, partial reduction in visual acuity, and the formation of other distinguishing features.

Details of the Find and Classification

A team of paleontologists led by Thiago Simões from Princeton University presented new data on snake evolution. The focus was on the fossil of a relatively small legless reptile found in 2020 in the Adamantina Late Cretaceous formation in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The specimen included the posterior part of the skull connected to a fragment of the postcranial skeleton consisting of 103 cervical and dorsal vertebrae, with a total length of 419 millimeters. The age of this find is estimated to be 75–85 million years old.

After studying the skeleton, Simões and his colleagues concluded that it was a snake, but its skull and vertebrae differed significantly from known modern and fossil relatives. Therefore, the discoverers classified it as a new species and genus, naming it Tametara mirim. Both the generic and specific epithets are taken from Tupí-Guaraní indigenous languages: the first means 'decorated' (related to the pronounced sagittal crest on the skull), and the second means 'small.'

Relationships with Other Reptiles

Researchers reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of T. mirim by comparing its anatomy with 166 modern and fossil reptile species, predominantly squamates and rhynchocephalians. The analysis showed that T. mirim branched off the evolutionary tree of snakes earlier than the common ancestor of all extant members of these groups, placing it in the stem group. According to the authors' estimates, the T. mirim lineage diverged early, alongside the Najash rionegrina lineage, which lived in Argentina about 90 million years ago. The addition of this new species to the reconstruction of snake origins confirms previous ideas that these reptiles appeared in the Middle Cretaceous, and their main group formed in the Early Late Cretaceous.

Brain Structure and Lifestyle

The preserved three-dimensional remains of the T. mirim skull attracted particular interest, allowing for the reconstruction of the brain structure from the endocranium. The anterior part of the brain contained shortened olfactory bulbs transitioning into moderately enlarged hemispheres, followed by a narrower midbrain with a weakly developed optic tectum. This structure is similar to the brains of modern fossorial snakes. However, the elongated midbrain and hindbrain, along with the enlarged posterior pituitary, are more consistent with semi-fossorial, terrestrial, or aquatic species.

An additional comparison of the T. mirim brain with Dinilysia patagonica, another stem snake from Argentina that lived about 90 million years ago, revealed significant differences in brain structure. Based on the inner ear (with an expanded vestibular area and simplified semicircular canals) and certain skull features, T. mirim led a fossorial lifestyle. In contrast, D. patagonica was likely terrestrial or semi-aquatic. Researchers conclude that the common ancestor of all snakes had a transitional lifestyle combining elements of burrowing and terrestrial locomotion, but among its descendants, highly specialized fossorial species, including T. mirim, emerged.

Conclusions on Snake Evolution

The study results show that stem snakes exhibited a high degree of diversity and were able to occupy many ecological niches, refuting the idea that the early evolution of these reptiles was a linear process. Consequently, the lifestyle of individual stem snakes cannot be automatically applied to the common ancestor of all crown snakes.
