Along with head coach Brendon McCullum, he transformed England's play in Test cricket using the 'Bazball' style. Under his leadership, the team achieved memorable victories against strong opponents such as New Zealand, Pakistan, and South Africa.
Joe Root previously led the England Test team from 2017 to 2022. During this period, he managed the team in 64 matches, winning 27 of them. However, he stepped down as captain following defeats against Australia and West Indies.
At 35 years old, Root remains the backbone of England's attack over the last four years. He surpassed Alastair Cook's record to become England's leading run-scorer in Test cricket and is among the top players in Test cricket history by total runs scored. Given his impressive form and experience, the ECB decided to entrust him with leading the team once more.

Despite leaving the Test division, McCullum will continue to serve as the head coach for England's one-day and T20 (white-ball) teams. His four-year tenure as the head coach of the Test team has concluded. During his coaching and Ben Stokes' captaincy, the England team developed a new culture of aggressive and positive play known as Bazball.
Richard Gold, Chief Executive of the ECB, noted that Brandon brought new energy to the England Test team, and that under his watch, the team achieved many memorable and brilliant victories. He expressed gratitude for McCullum's contribution, stating that now is the right time for changes in the Test team, as the main goal is to win the upcoming Ashes series next year.
Under McCullum's guidance, the England team reached the ICC T20 World Cup final this year, and recently also secured the world number one ranking in T20 after defeating India. Consequently, he will now focus entirely on white-ball cricket. Rob Key, Managing Director of Men's Cricket England, emphasized that under Brandon McCullum, the Test team experienced some of the most vibrant moments of recent years, and he completely changed the team's approach and style of play. He also noted that the players embraced his coaching style with great enthusiasm, and he prepared a generation of young talents who will form the foundation of English cricket in the coming years.
Commenting on his decision, Brandon McCullum stated that he greatly enjoyed coaching the England Test team and is proud of what they achieved. He acknowledged that this journey included both magnificent moments and difficult days, which is part of any such challenge. He called it an honour and a privilege, thanking the players, support staff, and all the fans for their support. Although he expressed regret about not continuing with the Test team, he respects the decision. His full concentration will now be directed towards improving the white-ball teams.
McCullum wished the England Test team good luck, noting the presence of outstanding talent in the dressing room and that it is a group of talented players. He assured that he will always support the team and hopes they will continue to bring pride to England. The ECB announced that the process of selecting a new head coach for the men's England Test team will begin soon. Among the candidates being discussed for the new role are Richard Dawson, Andy Flower, and Jonathan Trott.
