Students in Uttar Pradesh Schools Start Naming Saplings After Teachers, Helping Them Survive

In schools across Uttar Pradesh, saplings often perished previously; however, the situation changed after students began naming them after their teachers.

Scale of the Greening Initiative

In the districts of Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Farrukhabad, about 10,000 saplings were planted, and thanks to student care, approximately 75% of them are surviving. In government schools in Kanpur, children regularly water the saplings, remove dry leaves, and protect the young plants, transforming trees from textbook subjects into a part of daily life.

In 2023, social entrepreneur and researcher Vaibhav Rator founded the Revamp India Foundation after working on waste management issues in Kanpur. The Faldaar project was created to address a common problem: saplings were planted throughout Uttar Pradesh but rarely survived due to a lack of subsequent care. The initiative planted fruit trees such as mango, guava, amla, and jamun in government schools, providing campuses with nutrition, shade, and biodiversity.

The changes are reflected in the statistics: after implementing Faldaar, which incorporated elements of storytelling and student participation, sapling survival reached seven or eight out of ten. At PM Shri Primary School in Kanpur, students start their day by watering, cleaning, and checking on 'their' trees. This care continues at home: children plant saplings for birthdays, give them as gifts on special occasions, and grow trees in honor of their parents.

Science lessons are now conducted under the canopy of the trees. Students write poems about the trees and track growth cycles, transforming planting into practical learning. Today, Faldaar collaborates with 50–60 government schools in each of the three covered districts. A team of 25–30 volunteers conducts storytelling sessions and planting drives. The success of Faldaar lies not only in the 75% tree survival rate but also in proving that when children form an emotional connection with nature, care grows and is sustained.
