As a result of this suspension, Tulika Man has been excluded from the current tournament in Glasgow. Previously, she won a silver medal in the +78 kg weight category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and another medal win was expected from her.
Additionally, another Indian judoka, Arun Kumar, who failed an out-of-competition doping test, was excluded from the team on Thursday.
The Indian judo team has not yet flown to the competition, as their match schedule is planned for July 31. The judokas are scheduled to fly to Glasgow on July 27.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Kunal Ghosh received a suspension from the West Bengal Assembly for the remainder of Wednesday after causing a disturbance during discussions concerning the Home and Hill Affairs budget.
The situation escalated when Ghosh interrupted the speech of TMC's chief disciplinarian, Ahruzzaman, during the debates. This occurred after marshals forcibly removed Ghosh from the building because he refused to return to his seat despite repeated instructions from the Speaker.
These dramatic moments were a consequence of the escalating power struggle between competing factions within the legislative party TMC.
The disruption began when Ahruzzaman, representing the rebellious faction of TMC led by Ritabrata Banerjee, rose to speak. Ghosh approached the microphone and interrupted him, questioning why his own name was allegedly excluded from the list of speakers.
Speaker Rathindra Bose repeatedly called on Ghosh to return to his seat, and senior leaders tried to de-escalate the tension. However, when Ghosh refused to comply, the Speaker ordered the Assembly marshals to remove him from the hall. Ghosh resisted, leading to a brief scuffle, after which the marshals escorted him out, provoking protests inside the Assembly.
Industry Minister Tapas Roy initially proposed suspending Ghosh for the remainder of the current Assembly session. Nevertheless, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suggested that a one-day suspension would suffice. Adhikari stated: 'Such behavior is unacceptable. We are also in opposition, but there must be some accountability. Ahruzzaman is a senior MLA, and his father was also a long-serving MLA.'
Subsequently, the Speaker presented the proposal to the house, and Ghosh was suspended for the rest of the day by a vote, receiving support from legislators from both the BJP and the rebellious faction of TMC.
This incident highlighted the deepening rift between the 'Calcutta' faction led by Mamata Banerjee, to which Ghosh belongs, and the rebellious camp led by Ritabrata Banerjee within the TMC legislative party. Ghosh claimed that his name was removed from the list of speakers despite his nomination to participate in the budget debate on Home and Hill Affairs, and that this action prompted his protest in the hall.
The confrontation took place a day after disagreements over the list of opposition speakers surfaced, revealing tensions within the TMC legislative party. Deputies supporting the Calcutta faction alleged that names recommended by them were being excluded from the list of speakers, reflecting the ongoing struggle for coordination and control within the party.
