An international team, led by the SANAA office and in partnership with Estudio A0, Caá Porá Arquitectura, Jerome Haferd Studio, and Taller Capital Landscape, has been chosen to develop the design for the new Museo Nacional del Ecuador (MuNA) in the city of Quito.
The winning proposal, named 'Living Strata,' was selected after a final evaluation stage of the competition, which combined the jury's decision with public participation. The museum is conceived as an integrated civic landscape, uniting exhibition areas, public activities, and open green spaces.
According to the design team, the 'Living Strata' concept celebrates the union between diversity and unity, between culture and landscape, and between the ancient and the modern. Inspired by both pre- and post-Columbian cultures, the project uses circular forms as an organizing element, referencing collective memory, encounter, and the ties between people and place.
Rather than being seen as an isolated object, the project suggests a succession of connected environments that encompass galleries, educational installations, courtyards, and public areas, creating a continuous architectural experience. The internal organization revolves around a series of courtyards that connect the museum vertically while ensuring the entry of natural light and vegetation into the building's interior.
On the ground floor, the access area and public services are arranged as a set of pavilions inserted into an open landscape, which functions as an extension of the neighboring La Carolina Park, strengthening the connection of the site with the surrounding urban area. The wooded terraces extend to the upper floors, while flexible gallery spaces alternate more reserved exhibition rooms with wide, open floors ready to receive different curatorial approaches.
The curved geometry of the museum establishes a visual dialogue with the Pichincha volcano while reflecting the varied landscapes and cultural traditions of Ecuador. The development of the project involved the collaboration of a consulting team composed of indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian, and mixed-race members. The planning was done in cooperation with DVDL, and the curation was developed by Monica Vorbeck, with an emphasis on accessibility and an experience that transcends the exhibition halls.
The selection of the SANAA proposal occurred after an earlier round of the competition, where the organization implemented an additional evaluation phase that included public contribution alongside the jury's assessment. Upon completion, MuNA will serve to house Ecuador's national collections in a new cultural institution that articulates architecture, landscape, and public space in Quito.
