Brazilian Students Win Medals at International Biology Olympiad in Lithuania

A delegation of Brazilian students, who received training from the Butantan Institute, won a silver and two bronze medals at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), an event held in Lithuania.

Competition Results

The Brazilian students achieved a total of three medals and an honorable mention at the IBO, whose results ceremony took place on July 18 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Henrique Pongelupp Oliveira, representing Colégio Etapa, was the winner of the silver medal. The bronze medals were won by Davi Pinheiro Tsuchie, from Objetivo Colégio Integrado, and Enzo Katsuo Hassui, both from Colégio Etapa. Arthur Angelo Sartore, from ETEC Prof. Armando José Farinazzo, received the honorable mention.

The olympiad featured participation from high school students from over 70 nations. The competitors demonstrated great skill in solving complex biological questions and performing laboratory tasks. Before the event, the Brazilian team underwent training at the Butantan Institute, an institution linked to the State Health Secretariat (SES) of São Paulo. During this preparation, the students participated in theoretical and practical classes conducted by researchers from the institute, simulating the environment of international olympiads. Butantan is also responsible for organizing the Brazilian Biology Olympiad (OBB).

Henrique Pongelupp Oliveira had already won silver in the 2025 edition of the IBO, which took place in the Philippines, repeating his success. Sonia Andrade, coordinator of the OBB and researcher at the Butantan Institute, commented that this achievement highlights the quality of Brazilian students and underscores the relevance of the preparation provided by the Butantan Institute, emphasizing the dedication of the young people in one of the world's most rigorous scientific competitions.

Looking ahead, the next international biology olympiad on the 2026 calendar will be the 19th Ibero-American Biology Olympiad, which will be hosted, for the first time, at the Butantan Institute in São Paulo. Four other students trained by the Institute will represent Brazil in this contest. Furthermore, Brazil is currently seeking to host the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2030.
