Over the past 24 hours, four deceased women have been discovered in various locations across Spain. Of these incidents, three are under investigation as potential domestic violence crimes, while the most recent case, registered on Tuesday morning, is still in the initial stages of inquiry.
First Case in Almoradí
One alert was issued at 11:00 PM on Monday (equivalent to 10:00 PM in Lisbon), when the Guardia Civil was notified about the discovery of a 56-year-old female body in Almoradí, belonging to the province of Alicante. Initially, the death was classified as a domestic accident, but a subsequent inspection of the site revealed strong indications of a crime.
This finding led to the arrest of the woman's husband, a 61-year-old man, on Tuesday morning. Both resided in the same house, where the events allegedly took place, and were registered in the VioGén System, the Spanish system for protecting and monitoring victims of gender violence. However, the related process had been inactive since 2009.
Context of the VioGén System
Pilar Bernabé, the Government delegate in the Valencian Community, clarified that the suspect had been entered into the VioGén System following a complaint and was detained in 2008. The process was deactivated in 2009 due to the lack of judicial measures and was never reactivated.
Other Cases Registered
Additionally, María, 30, was found dead in a residence in Antequera, Málaga, on Monday, showing injuries caused by a bladed weapon. It is believed she was murdered by her boyfriend, a 35-year-old man, who subsequently took his own life. This couple had two children in common, aged 4 and 7, and were also listed in the VioGen system. Although the man had a restraining order against the victim, the domestic violence case was archived through a mutual agreement.
Later, around 11:50 AM, the suspect was located on the wall of Alcabaza. A few hours later, at 2:00 PM, emergency services received a call about a dead woman in a dwelling. The body showed signs of assault, specifically knife wounds, indicating a violent murder.
New Incidents in Toledo and Málaga
On Tuesday, another woman, 45, was found dead with bladed weapon injuries in Alameda de la Sagra, in the province of Toledo. The victim's husband was arrested by the Guardia Civil. Authorities reported that the victim was not registered in the Viogen system and that the man, 48, had no criminal record for similar offenses. After attempting suicide, he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the General University Hospital of Toledo under police custody.
According to Telecinco, the woman was of Ecuadorian nationality, and the suspect was Spanish but of Ecuadorian origin. One of the couple's children alerted emergency services, informing them that the father had killed the mother. At the residence, at the time of the homicide, there were three children of the couple present, including a minor, who was placed under the care of the Social Services of the Autonomous Community.
During Tuesday morning, another deceased woman showing signs of violence was located in Benahavís, Málaga. Investigation sources, cited by the Efe agency, indicated that the victim presented, at first glance, a cut to the neck caused by a bladed weapon. The alert was triggered by a witness who reported hearing a very loud scream and noticing a large amount of blood in the house. The suspect fled the scene at high speed.
Domestic Violence Statistics
Efe noted that, according to its data, a total of 46 women were murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain in 2025, representing the lowest number since the beginning of the historical series in 2003. As a result of these crimes, 35 children were orphaned, and three minors were fatal victims of domestic violence. In ten of the 46 cases, there were previous records of mistreatment within the scope of domestic violence, seven reported by the victims themselves and the other three by third parties. Furthermore, in four situations, the women had active protection measures, which proved insufficient to protect them from the aggressors.
