Japan made a donation of over 720 tons of food to Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. During the ceremony in Pemba, the provincial capital, Keiji Hamada, the Japanese ambassador to Mozambique, expressed hope that the food support would be directed to those in need, aiming to improve living conditions.
The aid consisted of 630 tons of rice and 92 tons of sardines, intended to assist approximately 10,500 families. The distribution was coordinated by the World Food Programme (WFP). Diplomat Hamada emphasized that the rice added to the canned fish distributed, strengthening food support for the internally displaced population.
Hamada mentioned that with this support in Cabo Delgado, a region rich in natural gas that has suffered armed attacks since October 2017, it is hoped that the suffering of the victims will decrease. This crisis has resulted in over 6,600 deaths and 1.1 million displaced people. Claire Conan, WFP representative in Mozambique, thanked Japan for its support, emphasizing the importance of food for the displaced in northern Cabo Delgado, stating that every kilogram represents the dignity of each family.
Valige Tauabo, Governor of Cabo Delgado, assured that the government maintains its commitment with partners to improve the situation of those affected. He reaffirmed the commitment to work in coordination with the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction, WFP, and other partners, ensuring that aid is transparent and reaches those who need it most, strengthening resilience and reconstruction.
Furthermore, Japan has already invested about $14 million in humanitarian and resilience programs in Mozambique since 2024. In terms of security, ACLED recorded 11 violent incidents in the first two weeks of June in Cabo Delgado, all linked to Islamic State extremists, raising the total number of deaths since 2017 to 6,632. ACLED reports indicate that out of 2,408 violent events recorded between October 2017 and June 14, 2,224 involved elements associated with the Islamic State in Mozambique (IS-Moz).
In another move, the Mozambican president announced on July 2 the relocation of the Northern Operational Theatre Command from Pemba to Mocímboa da Praia. This change aims to intensify military coordination and bring operations closer to the central areas of the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado. Daniel Chapo, after visiting the Northern Operational Theatre, stated that the new facility in Mocímboa da Praia will facilitate a more agile response to terrorist threats and reinforce military coordination in the northern part of the province, which is most affected by rebel groups.
