According to Paul Richard Gallagher, almost everyone he met asked him about a possible visit by the head of the Catholic Church to Ukraine. He stated that the Pope is very serious about this invitation.
Gallagher added that his group will study the conditions to determine the most suitable time and methods for Ukraine and for achieving world peace.
During his six-day stay in Ukraine, Gallagher held meetings with representatives of various institutions, religious leaders, and local communities.
When asked about the possibility of achieving a ceasefire between the warring parties, the Vatican diplomat emphasized Kyiv's determination to work in this direction. He noted that during these days he saw Ukraine's great focus in the desire and ability to work on this issue.
He also added that it is difficult for him to say now whether this will be possible in the short term, but action must be taken in this direction. Previously, Pope Francis always expressed a desire to visit Kyiv, but stated that he would carry out this trip when he could also visit Russia.
Against the backdrop of military sentiments, the Pope stated that current conflicts sow violence, terror, and death, affecting numerous innocent people. These words were spoken during his Sunday Mass in Castel Gandolfo, where he is on vacation.
Leo XIV emphasized that these military winds must not extinguish the flame of hope and peace, however fragile it may seem. He expressed a desire for the path to peace to proceed through dialogue, meeting, and diplomacy, as only such a path can lead to a just and lasting peace where peoples can live in harmony, mutual security, and respect for every person's dignity.
On the day of the celebration of Sailor's Sunday in the Catholic calendar, the Pope addressed his message to all 'seafarers, fishermen, and port workers of the world,' touching upon the topic of military clashes in the Azov and Ormuz Seas. He noted that the lives of seafarers are marked by 'separation from loved ones and sometimes fear of conflicts that shake maritime routes supporting the trade and life of many peoples through patient and quiet labor.'
Leo XIV arrived at the Papal Palace in Castel Gandolfo last Saturday to begin a period of rest that will last until July 27. During these weeks, all general, private, and special audiences will be suspended; however, the Pope has planned some events, including a visit to the Vatican Apostolic Library. He will also open the first section of the exhibition cycle 'Catastrophe and Miracle,' featuring works by three contemporary creators—artist JR, typographer Bill Morani, and chef Fulvio Pierangeli—which 'will engage in a dialogue with the heritage and spaces of these halls, in reflection on water as a threat and as a resource.'
General audiences are scheduled to resume their normal schedule on August 5.
