When cleaning a refrigerator, people usually thoroughly wash the internal shelves, drawers, and the exterior surface of the doors. However, they often overlook cleaning the rubber seal on the door. This element, which many forget to clean, can accumulate mold, dirt, and unpleasant odors in the corners and crevices over time.
Causes of mold growth on the seal
Because the rubber seal has many small gaps and grooves, particles of water, moisture, milk, juice, or food crumbs can get into them over time. These hard-to-reach areas contribute to dirt accumulation and mold development. Furthermore, the constant opening and closing of the refrigerator allows warm air from outside to penetrate, which maintains humidity on the rubber seal and promotes fungal growth.
Consequences of a dirty seal
The formation of a thick layer of dirt and mold can lead to a loss of elasticity and density of the seal. As a result, the refrigerator door stops closing hermetically, and cold air begins to escape. This negatively affects the operation of the cooling system, requiring more effort to maintain a low temperature. Electricity consumption increases, and incorrect temperature can lead to spoilage of food stored in the refrigerator.
Seal cleaning methods
There are several home methods for removing mold and dirt from the rubber seal.
1. Using salt, baking soda, and vinegar
To remove mold and dirt, take a small amount of salt in a bowl, add a little baking soda, and then pour in vinegar to form a paste. Dip a clean cloth in this paste, squeeze it well, and carefully apply it to the rubber seal for cleaning. When cleaning small and deep areas, you can use a thin object, such as a toothpick or a thin stick wrapped with cloth, and slowly run it along the seal's gaps to remove hidden dirt and mold.
2. Cleaning with alcohol
If the contamination is deep inside the seal, isopropyl alcohol will help. Apply a small amount of alcohol to a soft cloth or a mesh cotton pad, remove excess liquid, and then wrap this material around a rigid plastic card. Slowly run this tool along the narrow gaps of the rubber seal to clean hard-to-reach places.
3. Using toothpaste
Toothpaste and an old toothbrush can be used to clean the rubber gasket. First, apply a small amount of toothpaste to the rubber seal and leave it for 2-3 minutes. Then, use a slightly wet old toothbrush to gently clean the grooves and soiled areas. After cleaning, remove the toothpaste and dirt with a damp cloth, and then completely dry the seal with a dry cloth so that it does not remain moist.
Importance of drying after cleaning
It is equally important to dry the rubber seal after cleaning. If water or moisture remains in the crevices, mold may reappear after some time. Therefore, after cleaning, you must thoroughly wipe every corner and gap of the seal with a dry cloth.
Mold prevention
To avoid recontamination, the rubber seal should not be left in a dirty state for long. Regularly wipe it with a damp cloth and be sure to dry it completely. It is also crucial to immediately eliminate any leaks of food or drinks to prevent the accumulation of dirt, odors, and mold.
