The Brazilian Museum of Art at FAAP (MAB FAAP), located in São Paulo, is about to host a new and unprecedented exhibition dedicated to the Spanish artist Joan Miró. The show, titled 'Miró: Master of Forms,' will feature over 140 pieces, including tapestries, paintings, and sculptures never before seen in Brazil, starting on August 7th.
Curated by Jordi J. Clavero, the exhibition is organized into five sections spread across a total area exceeding 1,200 m². The collection used in the São Paulo show was gathered from three museums and fourteen private collections located in Europe, in addition to items belonging to Miró's own family. The exhibited works allow visitors to follow the artist's distinct artistic phases, ranging from Cubism to Surrealism.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 8 pm, and prior scheduling is required for entry. The space has been designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility and offers audio description for those with low vision. Ticket prices have not yet been disclosed, but it is possible to sign up for the waiting list through the Fever platform to receive a 20% discount, with pre-sales for subscribers scheduled for July 27th, starting at 12 pm.
Joan Miró, born in Barcelona in 1893, was a multifaceted artist who left a notable legacy in painting and sculpture. During his youth, he worked as a clerk while studying art and business. In 1911, after recovering from typhoid fever, he abandoned corporate life to pursue an artistic career, influenced by the Fauvist and Cubist movements that were gaining prominence in the Catalan capital.
His debut as a solo artist occurred in 1918 at the Dalmau Galleries in his hometown. In the following years, Miró significantly contributed to the artistic scene with works such as The Plowed Field (1923-1924), which depicts a landscape with animals on the family farm in Montroig, Catalonia; The Harlequin Carnival (1925-1925), a surreal portrait of the human psyche; and later, sculptures like Miss Chicago (1979) and Woman and Bird (1982) towards the end of his career.
The Modern Art Museum of São Paulo is set to resume public activities on September 12th, following a two-year renovation period. This return coincides with the launch of the 39th Panorama of Brazilian Art, a biennial exhibition that will remain on display until January 2027.
The main exhibition, curated by Diane Lima, focuses on how political advancements and battles for racial reparation have transformed Brazilian artistic production in recent decades. To compose this show, more than 30 artists from various regions of the country were selected.
During the closure period, the institution implemented several structural improvements and renewed its spaces. Furthermore, the Marquise do Ibirapuera underwent renovations. In recent years, the MAM has held over ten exhibitions at partner venues. Currently, it is promoting the MAM São Paulo visit to Sesc Bom Retiro, which is available until September 27th. This joint exhibition features approximately 50 works of different media and eras, blending the collections of both entities and utilizing the Sesc's library and other areas.
Founded in 1948, the MAM operates as a non-profit civil society. Its history includes periods at the headquarters of Diários Associados and the Trianon Pavilion before establishing itself at the Marquise do Ibirapuera in 1968, more than a decade after the park's inauguration. The museum's current collection comprises over 5,000 pieces, representing modern and contemporary art, with a strong presence of Brazilian artists.
Before the official opening to the public, the MAM will organize a charity event on August 18th, starting at 7 PM. The evening program will feature a concert by singer Marina Lima and DJ sets with invited DJs. The event's scenography was designed by José Possi Neto. Additionally, artist Carmela Gross will launch an unpublished work for the Collectors' Club, a group of associates who receive pieces annually. These works are produced in limited editions of 70 copies and are also incorporated into the museum's collection.
