Tourists and local residents heading to the beaches of Plettenberg Bay are strongly urged to exercise increased caution after the shark monitoring program in the town was suspended. This has deprived one of South Africa's most well-known coastal areas of its usual shark monitoring service.
The Plett Shark Spotters program officially announced the cessation of its activities on July 1, 2026. The reason was the expiration of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Bitou municipality at the end of June. Without the renewal of the agreement, the non-profit organization stated that it no longer had the legal authority or funding to continue monitoring the local beaches.
The organization emphasized that this decision was forced, and they intend to resume the service as soon as the necessary arrangements are finalized. Despite discussions with the municipality having been ongoing for months, a new agreement has not yet been approved.
The suspension of the program is causing concern because, according to Bloomberg, the Western Cape is currently in a period when white sharks are frequently found in coastal waters. Plett Shark Spotters recalled a recent incident of a white shark predation near Central Beach, indicating that shark activity remains a real threat.
Therefore, the organization urges everyone using the sea to remain vigilant, follow the advice of lifeguards and local authorities, and exercise caution when entering the water. The group also warned swimmers, surfers, and kayakers that venturing into the sea during the program's suspension is done at their own risk.
The Shark Spotters program was launched in Plettenberg Bay in 2023 following two fatal shark attacks that shocked the community the previous year. Since then, trained observers have monitored popular beaches from elevated viewpoints, alerting lifeguards and beachgoers to the approach of sharks to swimming areas.
This system follows a model first implemented in Cape Town in 2004. There, trained observers use high vantage points, warning flags, and radio communication to reduce the risk of shark encounters, allowing people to continue enjoying the sea. The goal of the system is not to remove sharks from the marine environment but to help people coexist safely with wildlife on the coast.
Although the beaches remain open, the absence of specialized observers prompts visitors to stay informed, follow lifeguard instructions, and avoid entering the water under unfavorable conditions. Shark Spotters thanked the Plettenberg Bay community, volunteers, partners, and supporters for their continuous support and promised to provide updates as soon as new information becomes available.

A recipe for a rich ragout made from chicken sausage (Wors) with added beans is presented.
To begin the process, take 600 grams of chicken sausage, add half a cup of water, and cook in a large skillet over medium heat until the liquid evaporates. Then, add three tablespoons of vegetable oil to the same skillet and fry the sausage until golden brown. After this, remove it, cut it into bite-sized pieces, and set it aside.
Add the diced medium onion to the same skillet and fry until translucent. Next, stir in the ginger and garlic paste and cook for thirty seconds. Add fresh thyme, then spices and Worcestershire sauce. Cook the mixture for another thirty seconds.
After that, add green chilies and canned tomatoes. Then stir in the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste, cooking for about five minutes until the oil floats to the surface. Add sugar and mix thoroughly.
Add the diced potatoes to the skillet and cook for two minutes. Then pour in chicken broth and water, after which reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are soft and tender. This stage takes from thirty minutes to an hour, depending on the altitude. When the potatoes are soft, add the rinsed and drained beans. Cook for another five minutes, then return the sausage to the skillet. Finish the dish with seasonings to taste, adding salt if necessary and ground black pepper. It is recommended to serve sprinkled with fresh parsley.
To prepare a traditional Cornish chicken curry, you will need 1 kg of peeled and cut chicken meat from Cornwall. The base of the dish consists of various spices and vegetables.
The necessary ingredients include a quarter cup of vegetable oil, one large onion, thinly sliced, a cinnamon stick, two bay leaves, one star anise, two curry leaves, one tablespoon of ginger and garlic paste, four tablespoons of masala, one teaspoon of ground cumin, one teaspoon of ground coriander, one teaspoon of turmeric, half a teaspoon of fennel powder, one teaspoon of garam masala, and two Roma tomatoes, peeled and pureed. You will also need one and a half cups of hot water, four small potatoes, peeled and cut into four pieces, as well as salt.
Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Then add the cinnamon stick, star anise, and bay leaves, and fry for a few seconds until fragrant. After that, add the onion and curry leaves, frying the onion until golden brown.
Next, add the ginger and garlic paste, which is fried for thirty seconds until the raw smell disappears. Then add the chicken, all the ground spices, and masala. Mix the mixture thoroughly and simmer on low heat for five minutes; if necessary, you can add a little water to prevent burning.
After this, add the tomatoes, and the dish simmers over medium or low heat for ten minutes. Then add a cup of water, cover the pot, and simmer on low heat for about an hour. Finally, add the potatoes, season with salt, and mix well. Add another half cup of water, and let the dish simmer for another hour or until the potatoes are soft and tender. Garnish the finished curry with cilantro and serve with rice, carrot salad, or roti. It should be noted that everyone prefers their own type of masala, so any desired option can be used. In this recipe, 2 tablespoons of Rombo Rossi and 2 tablespoons of Kasmiri Masala were used.
