Former Chief Statistician Pali Lehola presented a bleak picture of the South African economy during the Thought Leadership Seminar organized by the Electoral Commission. He noted that the current economy, valued at 7 trillion rand, should reach 21 trillion rand.
Dr. Lehola warned that high levels of unemployment and poverty pose a direct threat to the country's democratic future. As an advocate for economic transformation, he pointed out that corruption and inefficient state economic management are the causes of the current situation.
Speaking to media representatives on the sidelines of the IEC Thought Leadership Seminar in Centurion, he stated: 'This economy of 7 trillion rand should be 21 trillion rand. Our economic policies have been foolish. That is what has brought us here. There is so much wealth in this country, but we have restricted it.'
His concerns arose after the National Treasury announced the receipt of a $1.5 billion loan from the World Bank. These funds are intended to support reforms aimed at addressing infrastructure bottlenecks, boosting economic growth, and creating jobs. Lehola contrasted this reliance on external loans with the post-apartheid period when the country relied on its own resources.
He added that even in an economy of 21 trillion rand, the greedier could take 3 or 4 trillion rand, and there would still be 17 trillion rand left for everyone. However, now they are stealing from the economy of 7 trillion rand, leaving the poor behind.
Lehola called on the South African government to rethink its economic strategies, which he believes continue to hinder the country's development. He noted that officials fail to see the big picture and overlook the abundance because they are focused on theft. He also mentioned that seeking loans from the IMF has become commonplace.
Previously, during his official presentation, Dr. Lehola appealed to the IEC to actively participate in ensuring genuine democracy, which is reflected in economic freedom for South African youth. He emphasized that money labeled as 'crisis' is not related to development or democracy. In his view, a wise government should invest in agricultural initiatives, which falls under the IEC's mandate, otherwise unrest may occur.
The seminar was closed by Judge Daya Pillay, who commented on how growing inequality can push citizens to a critical point where the benefits of participation no longer outweigh the costs, and citizens begin to defend themselves in isolation.

Programs such as Nasi iSpani were launched to reduce youth unemployment and provide thousands of unemployed young people with work experience. After the elections, the contracts provided at the stadium expired and were not renewed.

The correct choice depends on individual circumstances, health status, other sources of income, and risk tolerance, so professional financial advice is strongly recommended before making a decision. Decisions regarding retirement income, such as life annuities or living annuities, carry various risks, benefits, and suitability considerations depending on personal circumstances.
Longevity changes everything. Retirement ceases to be a short, predictable phase, fundamentally transforming the approach to planning. Practical foundations are laid early. Shifting debt onto retirement reduces flexibility and increases pressure on already limited income, so debt reduction is often considered an important goal in pension planning.
In general financial planning discussions, strategies such as extending work can positively impact increased contributions, delayed withdrawals, and continued compound interest. The process during life is no less important. According to the 10X Retirement Reality Report, approximately 56% of South Africans who change jobs withdraw their pension savings, despite the fact that retaining funds remains one of the decisive factors for long-term outcomes. Every withdrawal resets progress and weakens the final result.
After retirement, sustainability depends on three variables: fees, withdrawal rates, and diversification. These factors are widely recognized in financial planning as influencing long-term sustainability, with a well-diversified portfolio remaining essential to overcome volatility over a long period.
Ultimately, longevity is not a risk. Lack of preparation is the risk. The question is not just whether you can retire, but whether your plan can support the life you are likely to live.

If the proportion of healthcare workers per capita has risen, why does the system still feel overloaded? Part of the answer lies in the significant population growth of South Africa. Since 1994, the country's population has increased by over 50%, and today every clinic, hospital, ambulance service, and healthcare worker serves a much larger population than at the beginning of the democratic era.
It is important to understand that simply matching capacity to population growth is not enough. Although the availability of medical personnel has improved, the country still faces serious limitations. These include immense pressure on public sector doctors, shortages and uneven distribution of nurses, and access issues in several communities. Compared to many upper-middle-income countries, South Africa is still far from solving its healthcare workforce challenges.
This explains the discrepancy between official statistics and public opinion. Patients evaluate the system not based on national averages, but on the quality of care at a specific clinic or hospital. The system may have more doctors than twenty years ago, but it can still force patients to wait for hours, and improved nurse availability may be accompanied by management issues and staff shortages in certain areas.
The report's findings point precisely to this reality: capacity constraints have eased in various aspects but have not disappeared entirely. Progress has been made, yet the gap between the current situation and reasonable citizen expectations remains significant. This difference is critically important because it changes the direction of political discussions. If the system were collapsing, the priority would only be to stop the decline. But since the system has expanded while remaining under strain, the task becomes more complex: policymakers must continue to build capacity while simultaneously improving management, efficiency, distribution, and patient care quality.
South Africans have every right to demand better healthcare, and they must continue to do so. However, these demands must be based on an honest assessment of the country's current state. The data does not support the narrative of a 'washed out' system; rather, it points to a system that has expanded key elements of its capacity under difficult conditions but lags significantly behind citizen expectations for a country of this level of development. The problem is not that South Africa failed to build a large healthcare system, but that it needs to build a better one.
