Prices for gold and silver, which had been rising since the beginning of the current week and increasing for three consecutive days, suddenly halted their ascent on Thursday, leading to a decrease in the value of both precious metals.
Sharp Drop in Silver Prices
Silver experienced a significant fall, becoming more affordable by over 5000 rupees per kilogram. Consequently, the commodity market was sluggish from the start of trading on Thursday, triggering a collapse in previously rising prices for gold and silver.
In the previous trading day, silver closed at 2,26,998 rupees per kilogram, but on the day of the drop, it fell to 2,21,820 rupees, representing a decrease of 5,178 rupees per kilogram.
Silver Price Fluctuations This Week
On the last trading day of last week, the futures price of silver with an expiration date of September 4th on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) was 2,16,013 rupees per kilogram. However, during the first three trading days of this week, by the close on Wednesday, the price of 1 kg of silver reached 2,26,998 rupees, an increase of 10,985 rupees per kilogram. By the time the news was published on Thursday, the price had fallen by more than 5000 rupees.
Comparison with Historical Highs
Following the sharp drop in silver prices on Thursday, when compared to historical highs, the MCX Silver Price is 1.93 lakh rupees below its peak level. In January, the futures price of silver exceeded the 4 lakh rupee mark for the first time, reaching a maximum of 4,20,048 rupees, making silver 1,93,050 rupees cheaper compared to the current price.
Decline in Gold Value
Similar to silver, gold also became cheaper. In the previous trading day, the price of 24-carat gold with an expiration date of August 5th on MCX was 1,45,680 rupees, but by the time the news was released, it had dropped to 1,44,057 rupees per 10 grams. Thus, 10 grams of 24-carat gold became cheaper by 1623 rupees.
End of Three-Day Rise
On the last trading day of last week, the price of gold was 140,906 rupees per 10 grams at the end of futures trading. However, over the three days this week, gold also showed a rapid increase, rising by 4774 rupees. Furthermore, in late January, gold surpassed the 2 lakh rupee mark and is now approximately 60,000 rupees cheaper per 10 grams.
Reasons for the Sudden Price Drop
The main reason cited for the sudden decline in gold and silver prices is the ongoing war between the USA and Iran in the Middle East. The rise in tension in the Middle East has led to a sharp increase in crude oil prices. At the time of publication, the Brent Crude Oil Price was trading around $98 per barrel. The increase in oil prices raises inflation risk, and as a result, people are increasingly prioritizing holding cash, selling gold and silver to preserve capital.
