Change in Film Titles
This is linked to the fact that Vijay was appointed as the minister of Tamil Nadu just over two months ago. Consequently, instead of the traditional film opening featuring 'Thalapathy Vijay' (Commander Vijay), the screen will now display 'The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu C Joseph Vijay'. Tickets for hundreds of screenings in India and abroad for the weekend are sold out, and the picture is expected to become one of the most profitable projects in the producers' history.
International Release and Delays
The film will also be shown in South Africa starting this Friday, confirmed by Elavarasan Varadharajan, a distributor of South Indian films in the country. The premiere took place almost six months after the originally planned date in January, as the release was postponed for several reasons.
Reasons for Postponement and Censorship
The censorship board deemed some scenes unacceptable, arguing that they could cause tension in certain communities in India during the heightened atmosphere ahead of elections. Furthermore, there were concerns that Vijay was using the film as a tool for vote canvassing, given that he founded his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for participation in state elections.
Political Activities and Changes in the Film
Even before the film's release, Vijay's campaign gathered tens of thousands of fans at various venues, one of which resulted in a stampede causing 41 deaths and over 100 injuries, for which Vijay was initially held responsible. After a crushing victory over the ruling party, Vijay assumed the highest post in the state and immediately began working to support women and fight corruption, including dismissing a high-ranking official from his party last week after he was filmed accepting a large bribe.
Insiders report that the original film was altered not only in the title credit. Initial promotional materials for 'Jana Nayagan' showed Vijay in a police uniform, presenting the film as a farewell from 'Thalapathy' Vijay to the screen. The marketing focused on fan nostalgia, with grand theatrical events planned. However, the focus has completely changed. Now, the promotion presents the film as the final appearance of the incumbent head of the Indian state. The new version also contains cuts requested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Among these are references to the father of the Indian constitution, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, and explicit mentions of Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which had to be removed or altered to obtain a release permit.

Terms such as 'New India' and certain religious and political imagery were removed or heavily modified in audiovisual promotional materials to comply with the directives of the Censorship Board. Grand public events scheduled for January were completely canceled due to official protocols for ministerial appearances and associated security risks. Fans are undoubtedly disappointed that Vijay cannot personally attend some premieres as planned, as he cannot participate in traditional film premieres, talk shows, or commercial fan events as a minister.
The film's release was also affected by a leak of the film version in April, which impacted negotiations for large fees with satellite and online broadcasters who were supposed to pay unprecedented sums for screening rights. A targeted fight against piracy of 'Jana Nayagan' has been ongoing since then. Despite all these changes and difficulties, the public excitement among fans has not waned.
