Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a gradual decrease in monsoon activity compared to previous days. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of prolonged rains in several districts of the region on Wednesday, July 22. The Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Lucknow reported that the decrease in activity is linked to the weakening of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal and the southward shift of the monsoon.
According to the IMD forecast, heavy rains are expected in districts such as Banda, Chitrakoot, Priyagaraj, Sonbhandr, Mirzapur, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, and Lalitpur, as well as in adjacent areas. Residents of these places are advised to remain vigilant due to changing weather conditions. The meteorological department warned that rain or thunderstorms are possible in various places across Eastern and Western Uttar Pradesh on July 22, including areas with heavy precipitation.
The IMD has not issued special warnings for the period from July 23 to July 25. However, localized rains or brief thunderstorms may occur in the eastern and western parts of the state during these days. The meteorological department notes that monsoon processes will remain relatively weak during this interval. Nevertheless, the IMD predicts a possible intensification of monsoon activity in Uttar Pradesh starting from July 26, which could signal the beginning of a new rainy period at the end of the month.
As monsoon activity decreases, an increase in the maximum temperature in the region is expected over the next four to five days, potentially approaching normal levels. The IMD cautioned districts prone to heavy rain about potential consequences: flooding of low-lying areas, inundation of roads and small bridges, sharp rise in river and stream levels, and disruption of transport. Furthermore, visibility may be affected by heavy rainfall, impacting road traffic, and there is a risk of damage to temporary and non-capital structures. The meteorological department advises residents to avoid flood-prone areas and not to cross flooded roads, bridges, and tunnels. During extreme rainfall, people should remain in safe permanent buildings and exercise extra caution while driving, avoiding unnecessary trips until the weather normalizes.
According to the IMD, as of July 21, Uttar Pradesh had recorded 225.3 mm of rainfall against a normal of 275.1 mm, representing a deficit of 18 percent. Eastern Uttar Pradesh recorded a rainfall deficit of 27 percent, while Western Uttar Pradesh's rainfall amount is nearly normal, lagging by only 2 percent.
The meteorological department reported that over the last 24 hours, as of 8:30 AM on Tuesday, the highest rainfall of 190 mm was recorded in Chunar, Mirzapur. Significant rainfall was also noted: 120.8 mm in Uska Bazar, Siddhathnagar; 125.2 mm in Shahjahanpur; and 125 mm in Gunnaur, Sambal. Additionally, heavy rains were recorded in many other districts, including Gorakhpur, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Balrampur, Sonbhandr, Unnao, Kanpur Nagar, Barabanki, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Badaun. The meteorological department emphasized that the probability of heavy rains persists in the southern districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, but after this, the intensity of precipitation may decrease, although signs of monsoon resumption are visible from July 26.
Light rain was observed in some areas of Delhi-NCR on Wednesday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cloudy weather is expected in Delhi throughout the day.
Small and moderate precipitation is possible in many places from morning until noon. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms, strong wind gusts of 20-30 km/h, and storms. The IMD predicts that light rain may resume in some areas of Delhi in the evening and at night. The maximum temperature in Delhi will be between 31°C and 33°C, and the minimum will be between 24°C and 26°C. Meteorologists issued a warning about rainy weather for Delhi-NCR on July 23.
The impact of prolonged heavy rains in the Western Himalayas is now being felt in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Excess water flowing from the mountains and the active monsoon season have led to flooding situations in several districts of the state. Flooding occurred in government hospitals in Firozabad and Unnao, negatively affecting the operation of medical institutions. Additionally, a bridge over a canal collapsed in the Shamli area, causing an adjacent road to collapse by approximately 10 feet and completely blocking traffic on that route.
Rains continue in various parts of Uttar Pradesh. According to SkyMet Weather, on July 21, Aligarh recorded 70 mm of precipitation, Bahraich recorded 56 mm, Kanpur recorded 41 mm, Meerut recorded 31 mm, Shahjahanpur recorded 34 mm, Azamgarh recorded 48 mm, Prayagraj recorded 96 mm, and Lucknow recorded 19 mm.
According to data collected by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), temperatures of 40.1 degrees Celsius were recorded in the city of Toyota, located in Aichi Prefecture. In the neighboring Gifu Prefecture, in the cities of Tajimi and Gujo, higher readings were registered—up to 40.3 and 40 degrees Celsius, respectively.
As reported by the Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the highest temperatures in the entire observation history were noted in Toyota and Gujo. Other settlements in the region, such as Nagoya or Kumagaya, also reached temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Tokyo exceeded 35 degrees Celsius by noon.
In April, the JMA introduced the term 'kokushobi' following a nationwide survey. This term is intended to designate days when the temperature reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius and serves to alert citizens about dangerous heat. For days with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius and above, authorities use the designation 'moshobi,' which translates to 'extreme heat day.'
