Positive signs have emerged regarding the planned limited-overs series between India and Bangladesh, scheduled for September 2026. The young State Minister for Youth and Sports of Bangladesh, Aminul Haque, announced on Tuesday that his government anticipates the Indian team's visit to Bangladesh in September and believes that sports can be the most effective means of bridging the gap in relations between the two countries.
Previously, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced at the beginning of the year that India would visit Bangladesh in August-September 2026 for a series comprising three ODI matches and three T20 matches. This tour was originally scheduled for 2025 but was cancelled due to tensions between the two nations.
Recently, relations between India and Bangladesh have seen escalation. Consequently, the then-Yunus government withdrew its team from the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. Following this, uncertainty regarding India's visit to Bangladesh persisted for a long time.
However, the situation has recently begun to change. The BCB started the process of selling television and media rights for the series, which indicated progress in preparations for the tour. Furthermore, since T20 matches were not included in India's tour schedule in Sri Lanka in August, this increased the likelihood that the Indian team could visit Bangladesh immediately afterward.
The BCB also clarified that if required by the Indian team, security measures during the series would be enhanced. Nevertheless, new doubts arose when the BCB suspended the entire process of selling media content rights despite issuing a tender.
In parallel, speaking to journalists in Dhaka, the State Minister for Sports, Aminul Haque, emphasized that the current government places top priority on sports diplomacy. He noted that cricket is a source of pride for the country and represents a strong identity in world cricket. Haque stated that they had held talks with the Indian embassy and received positive feedback, as everyone anticipates the visit to Bangladesh in September.
Discussing the situation with a Cricbuzz representative, he expressed hope that after India's arrival, the tension caused by past minor incidents would subside, and dialogue, travel, and connections between the two neighboring countries would strengthen, as before.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Sports of Bangladesh established a special commission to investigate the decision to withdraw the team from the T20 World Cup, and also formed a separate group to determine whether the tournament withdrawal was a diplomatic failure.
Tension is growing in the fan community regarding the future of Rohit Sharma, the explosive batsman of the Indian team. Rumors are circulating among fans about Rohit potentially ending his career in ODI format, with these reports surfacing just before the third ODI match against England at Lord's.
Former experienced Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made highly critical remarks about the selection policy and overall approach of the BCCI. In his YouTube show 'ASH ki BAAT', Ashwin sharply criticized the treatment of Rohit Sharma, calling it incomprehensible.
Ashwin noted that the prospects of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup had already been discussed. He believes that if an athlete understands that the management does not want him in the squad, it will inevitably demoralize him and negatively affect his performance.
Referring to statistical data, Ashwin stated that after the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit demonstrated impressive play. Since 2024, in 19 ODI matches, Rohit has scored 819 runs at an average of 45.21 and a strike rate of 109.15, including one century and six half-centuries.
Ashwin questioned the leadership of the team and the BCCI, stating that excluding a veteran like Rohit Sharma, or pushing him towards leaving the team at this stage, is completely unfair. He insisted that after the BCCI Champions Trophy, the selectors should have met with Rohit to clearly discuss future plans.
On the other hand, former teammate Parit Patel also shared his opinion. Parit noted that Rohit is always capable of returning to the game with a decisive knock after two or three unsuccessful matches. He added that all Indian fans hope that if this is indeed his last match, he will bid farewell to international cricket at Lord's with a magnificent century.
