A lawsuit filed against Meta has placed the use of artificial intelligence in employment decision-making processes at the center of an intense debate. Twenty-six former employees allege that AI-based tools may have influenced a recent wave of layoffs at the company.
Allegations of Discrimination
According to Reuters, workers with disabilities or those on medical leave were disproportionately affected by the actions. The plaintiffs claim that the company violated regulations designed to protect employees against retaliation and discrimination.
The litigation was filed in a federal court located in Oakland, California, and involves former employees from six US states and the District of Columbia. The plaintiffs argue that an AI-powered software participated in evaluating professionals during the corporate cuts.
Details of Cuts and Criteria
Among the parameters analyzed by the AI system were employee productivity and the level of utilization of artificial intelligence resources. Meta had announced earlier this year its intention to reduce about ten percent of its global workforce, corresponding to approximately eight thousand people. The layoffs began in May, with subsequent phases planned.
The 26 plaintiffs filed the action anonymously, indicating that the technology contributed to targeting professionals in more vulnerable situations. Factors considered in the process include performance indicators, the use of AI tools, periods of absence for health reasons, and the impact on workers protected by labor laws.
Meta's Stance
In response to the allegations, Meta vehemently denied the accusations. A company spokesperson stated that no artificial intelligence system was responsible for choosing which employees would be laid off. The representative categorically stated: 'Organizational and workforce management decisions are and have been made by people, not by AI.'
The lawsuit is still in its initial phase and awaits the analysis of evidence presented by both the former employees and Meta's defense. This case serves as a new example of the emerging challenges with the increasing integration of artificial intelligence into corporate environments.
