The United States is currently reassessing its aviation regulations with the aim of boosting the introduction of innovations such as personal aerial vehicles (flying cars), supersonic aircraft, and new drone activities. This initiative involves regulatory modifications to keep pace with industry progress.
Focus on eVTOLs and regulatory testing
According to Reuters, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working to establish a safe framework that allows for the implementation of these technologies, avoiding barriers that could inhibit the development of new types of aircraft. Among the FAA's priorities are eVTOLs, which are electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing.
The agency is conducting a pilot program involving eight companies across 26 American states, aiming to collect essential data for creating future certification processes. FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau emphasized that regulation must evolve alongside the sector without restricting companies' capacity for innovation.
Rocheleau stated that the goal is to avoid overly prescriptive standards, allowing the industry itself to lead innovation. These vehicles are primarily designed for short trips, such as intra-city travel or routes to airports, offering a more agile alternative when ground traffic presents difficulties.
Integration and business vision
The FAA also intends to analyze how these new aircraft can be safely incorporated into conventional airspace. The deputy administrator explained that the goal is to integrate this emerging technology into the national airspace efficiently and safely.
In the private sector, eVTOL manufacturers are seeking to convert their prototypes into viable commercial services. Adam Goldstein, CEO of Archer Aviation, drew an analogy between the expansion of flying taxis and the path taken by Waymo's autonomous vehicles, stating that the world has learned a great deal from the launch of the latter.
According to the executive, starting with smaller-scale operations helps both companies and regulators identify potential flaws, adjust systems, and plan progressive expansion. Emerging technologies in new air mobility include electric VTOL taxis, supersonic jets for faster travel, increased commercial drone operations, and new certification models for innovative aircraft.
Return of supersonic flights
In addition to eVTOLs, the FAA is reviewing the rules applicable to supersonic airplanes. The agency has already published the first of two necessary guidelines to revoke the ban on supersonic flights over land areas, established in 1973. The second stage will focus on defining noise limits for takeoff, landing, and flight above the speed of sound.
Both regulations are expected to be finalized by mid-2027. Rocheleau commented that he considers the current rules outdated. Commercial supersonic transport ceased in 2003 after the Concorde, operated by Air France and British Airways, was withdrawn from service after 27 years of operation. However, even after the approval of new regulations, the FAA and other regulatory bodies will have to certify the aircraft before any possible return of commercial supersonic flights.
