The House of Baron of Vassouras, an important historical asset of the Coffee Valley in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, will be integrated into the Fluminense cultural circuit under new management. Since the end of May, the space has been administered by Sesc RJ, as announced by the new managers.
The managers intend to transform the location into a unit focused on culture, education, training, and creative economy. The transfer of the property to Sesc RJ occurs after an extensive restoration process. The house was closed in 2020 to undergo renovations costing R$ 19 million and was only reopened to the public at the end of 2025, following the detailed recovery of architectural and decorative elements using techniques from its construction era.
During the restoration, various structural components were recovered, including Portuguese tiles, floors, walls, frames, facades, roofs, and ceilings. It is important to note that before this recovery, the site remained inaccessible for fifty years. Sesc RJ will take over the administration through a free concession with an initial term of 25 years, renewable by the Municipal Prefecture of Vassouras.
With the new administration, Sesc RJ plans to use the house to host exhibitions, both temporary and permanent, in addition to promoting shows and audiovisual screenings. Furthermore, the space will be dedicated to organizing workshops, events focused on cultural tourism and heritage education, with special programming for children and families.
The House of Baron of Vassouras was built sometime in the 19th century, with estimates pointing to the 1830s, serving as the residence of Francisco José Teixeira Leite. This property symbolized the prosperity of a large farmer during the coffee cycle in the city. Although originally from São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais, Teixeira Leite established residence in Vassouras and obtained the title of local baron of the Empire in 1871.
The building witnessed Brazilian historical milestones, such as the signing of the contract for the construction of the D. Pedro II Railway, now known as Central do Brasil, which is commemorated by a plaque on its facade. Despite being listed by Iphan in 1958 as part of the city's urban architectural ensemble, the residence entered a long period of disuse in the late 20th century. Debts and legal disputes over possession kept the property without adequate preservation from the 1970s until the start of renovation works in 2020. Currently, the property is located at Praça Eufrásia Teixeira Leite, in the Center of Vassouras.
The practice of cold immersion, once reserved for elite athletes, has now spread to regular gyms, recovery studios, and wellness centers in Cape Town, where it is promoted as a method for 'nervous system regulation.'
National Geographic has raised critical questions regarding the popularity of ice baths, wondering whether such exposure truly contributes to weight loss, enhanced mental acuity, and faster post-workout recovery. According to research findings, many of the claimed benefits are not substantiated.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal Medicine in 2026 analyzed 13 randomized controlled trials involving 214 physically active individuals. It was found that immersion in cold water was more effective than whole-body cryotherapy in alleviating delayed onset muscle soreness within 24 hours, although the statistical significance of this effect disappeared after 48 hours.
Regarding performance, the review authors were more cautious. Whole-body cryotherapy showed a small and inconsistent short-term boost to jumping performance after 24 hours, but no difference between the two methods was observed after 48 hours. Researchers also noted high heterogeneity in the analysis of jumping performance, which requires caution when making such claims.
Another systematic review and meta-analysis, published in PLoS One in 2025, examined 11 studies involving 3177 healthy adults who were exposed to cold showers, ice baths, or immersions at temperatures ranging from 7°C to 15°C for periods from 30 seconds to two hours. The review showed an acute inflammatory response immediately after immersion and one hour later. Stress levels decreased after 12 hours, but no immediate, hourly, 24-hour, or 48-hour reduction was observed.
Furthermore, this study did not reveal any significant immediate or hourly impact on immune function. However, the same work noted positive aspects: improved sleep quality and quality of life, as well as a trend toward a 29% reduction in absenteeism among participants who took cold showers. Nevertheless, the evidence base was limited by a small number of randomized trials, small sample sizes, and insufficient population diversity in the studies.
In a narrative review published in the International Journal of Biometeorology in 2025, possible mechanisms of hydrotherapy through thermogenesis and brown fat—a type of fat tissue that burns energy to generate heat—were discussed. However, this is merely interesting physiological information, not proof that weekly immersion leads to noticeable weight loss.
A separate review in the Journal of Thermal Biology warned that severe thermal discomfort during full immersion can increase the risk of drowning due to hypothermia or prolonged exposure to harmful water temperatures. Another review in Autonomic Neuroscience defines hypothermia as a core temperature below 35°C and lists possible symptoms, including shivering, respiratory depression, cardiac arrhythmias, brain dysfunction, hypotension, and muscle dysfunction.
Thus, a short dip in cold water after intense exercise may help some people feel less exhausted the next day. It may also benefit those suffering from stress or sleep problems, depending on the protocol and individual characteristics. However, it currently does not deserve all the promises made by the health industry: being a fat burner, a brain enhancer, an immune upgrade, a miracle recovery, a character test, or a personality replacement in one steel tub. Cold water remains just water, even if marketing promises otherwise.

This visual addition expands the aesthetic alternatives of the model that was officially launched in March of this year. While the GS Trophy variant was specifically designed to compete in the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2026, which will take place in Romania, the new black paint aims to strengthen the appeal of the production version, emphasizing the motorcycle's classic and adventurous style.
Inspired by the historic BMW R 80 G/S, the R 12 G/S blends retro characteristics with contemporary technologies. According to the manufacturer, this new paint accentuates the bike's vigor and seeks to attract riders who prefer a more discreet look for a GS, while maintaining the traditional identity of the line.
The mechanical structure of the motorcycle remains unchanged. It is equipped with the 1,170 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine, which operates with air and oil cooling. This engine generates 109 hp at 7,000 rpm and produces 11.7 kgfm of torque at 6,500 rpm.
Developed for use on both roads and off-road terrain, the R 12 G/S features long-travel suspension with manual adjustment, a 21-inch spoked front wheel, and a 17-inch rear wheel. The final drive uses BMW's traditional system, the cardan shaft.
