Remains of an ancient hippodrome discovered in Apollonia Kyrene in Libya

In addition to the hippodrome, archaeologists were able to identify the remains of sanctuaries and a theater. According to a report by Arkeonews, about a third of ancient Apollonia, which was founded by Greeks during the Great Colonization, is now underwater, but part of the port city's ruins remains on land, among which are the ruins of an ancient theater.

New findings and dating

The recently discovered theater, located on the Mediterranean coast, does not yet have a clear identification, although there is a suggestion that it might have been an odeon. The construction time for both the hippodrome and this theater also remains unknown. According to preliminary data, the found hippodrome dates back to the 5th century BC.

Other archaeological discoveries

As part of other research, German archaeologists conducted rescue and salvage operations in the state of Hesse before the construction of a solar power plant near Bad Camberg. During these operations, they managed to discover and excavate an elite Celtic burial belonging to the early period of the La Tène culture, which formed in the middle of the first millennium BC.
