The Hawks' investigative unit in the Mpumalanga province has secured a preservation order for a Toyota Hilux, valued at approximately R180,000. This followed the discovery of four packages of hashish during a vehicle inspection.
Circumstances of the Arrest
Police discovered four plastic-wrapped packages of hashish hidden inside the vehicle. The order was issued by the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela.
A Hawks representative in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, stated that the incident occurred on October 8, 2025. South African Police Service members were conducting a stop and search operation at the Jeppes Reef Port of Entry. The white Toyota Hilux was stopped and inspected after sensors detected a suspicious odor.
Discovery and Arrest
The initial inspection yielded no results; however, a more thorough check led to the discovery of four packages concealed in the vehicle's chassis, under the gearbox, and beneath the left front door. The driver, who was also the registered owner, allegedly confessed that the hidden packages contained hashish. He was immediately arrested and charged with hashish trafficking.
The Toyota Hilux, which is presumed to have been used in the commission of the crime, was confiscated and entered into the SAPS 13 exhibit register at the Schoemansdal police station for further investigation.
Obtaining Judicial Authorization
Following an application by the National Prosecuting Authority, the Asset Forfeiture Unit, and the Hawks' asset investigation team, the High Court granted a preservation order concerning the vehicle, valued at approximately R180,000. Nkosi emphasized that this achievement resulted from the combined efforts of the Prosecution, Hawks financial investigators, and the operational officers who carried out the arrest.

Meanwhile, the regional head of the Priority Crime Investigation Directorate in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber, highly praised the diligence and dedication of the investigators and operational officers from the Schoemansdal police station. He noted that their efforts are aimed at ensuring law enforcement regarding assets allegedly used in criminal activities. Gerber added that continuous cooperation with partners from the National Prosecuting Authority confirms their commitment to the principle that crime should not yield profit.
