The Singh Siblings company, founded in 2001, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It initially began as a modest, independent satirical sketch show called 'Rainbow Indignation,' which premiered at the old Kwazuka Theatre in Durban in post-apartheid South Africa. Today, in 2026, this small initiative has evolved into a significant cultural phenomenon.
The company, led by Artistic Director Ashwin Singh and his sister, Producer Shantaal Singh, marks this milestone not only locally but also globally. Over a quarter of a century, the siblings have consciously avoided the easy path; instead of creating safe and escapist entertainment, they chose to illuminate the complex, beautiful, and sometimes harsh realities of life in South Africa.
For Singh, the mission has always been deeply personal. He grew tired of seeing his hometown reduced to superficial and predictable stereotypes on stage and screen. He noted that they deliberately chose a more difficult path to create art that directly addresses the disappointments following apartheid. However, as audience experience shows, the trauma in their productions is always balanced by deeply human qualities—resilience and humour.
Singh explains that he draws inspiration from the real stories of people from their communities who face numerous hardships in South Africa but still find the strength to survive. He emphasizes that people can cry every week yet smile and laugh daily because they consider it healthy. He asserts: 'We manage poorly, but we are not sick people. We possess resilience.'
Maintaining an independent artistic company for 25 years without compromise requires strong character and reliable support. For Singh, that support has always been Shantaal. He says they have always been connected both emotionally and intellectually. Beyond her role as a dedicated producer, Shantaal, as a psychologist, acts as Singh's first script editor, bringing expert understanding of the human psyche to character development.
In the early stages, the duo combined their creative aspirations with corporate work: Singh worked as a lawyer and academic jurist, while Shantaal was a clinical psychologist. This financial independence allowed them to avoid pressure to make concessions for commercial gain. Singh admits that the art world can sometimes be lonely and emotionally draining, but thanks to each other, they have been able to adhere to their principles and prioritize the work above all else.
While maintaining adherence to Durban's local characteristics, The Singh Siblings have inadvertently revealed a universal truth: the more specific the story, the more international it becomes. Singh's highly acclaimed solo performances, such as 'Reoca Light' and 'High Stakes,' are published in seven European languages, including Catalan, French, Spanish, and Romanian, under the collective title 'South African Monologues.' Simultaneously, Professor Ujwal Jana has translated his dramatic anthologies into Bengali.
For the playwright, translating works rich in dialogue and rhythm is a rare and humbling honour. Singh expresses satisfaction that the plays have been translated into various Indian and European languages, as this indicates that people far away have resonated with his characters. He shares that he is humbled by the knowledge that characters like Sunil and Gita will share their thoughts and feelings in Catalan, French, Gujarati, and Bengali.
To mark 25 years of independent creativity, three major international events are taking place worldwide this year. The journey began in February in Kochi, India, where Sacred Heart College hosted a screening of 'Durban: Creolized Creative City' and a lecture by Singh on his creative journey as an 'Afro-Indian' creator.
Momentum is building towards the main celebration, which will take place on Saturday, August 22nd, in the siblings' hometown of Durban, at the 1860 Heritage Centre in partnership with the Durban International Book Fair. The event, 'The Singh Sibling’s Synergies,' will feature performances, academic papers, and the launch of three new books. The global anniversary tour will officially conclude on October 9th in London, UK, with a final international book launch.
Remaining true to his humble spirit, Singh emphasizes that the August celebration is not a personal victory. He believes that creating theatre and film are collaborative processes, and the company did not reach a quarter century without the invaluable contribution of these people.
Although 25 years is a reason to look back, Singh's creative potential is already focused on the future. After the August festivities, his focus will shift to cinema. Over the next two years, he plans to shoot and release two new documentaries. The first will address the ongoing societal prejudices faced by the LGBTQ+ community in South Africa. The second will explore the growing political and cultural alienation of youth born in South Africa within the Indian community.
Furthermore, he is launching a dedicated YouTube channel to archive the entire history of the company's theatrical productions, films, and comedy sketches, as well as a new interview series providing a platform for marginalized voices. For young artists who are hesitant about giving up their raw, authentic voice for quick pay, Singh advises: 'It will be a difficult, sometimes lonely path, but the cultural and emotional impact you make with content-driven work will far outweigh fleeting commercial success. If you create plays and films focused on issues and featuring vibrant, unconventional characters, your work will be remembered. Make bold choices, and you will find colleagues who will help you realize your vision. We did it, so why not you?'
An official representative of the National Media Authority (NMA) stated that the proposed restrictions, which prohibit children under 15 from independently creating social media accounts, are unlikely to have a significant impact on the rapidly growing content creator economy in the UAE.
Authorities believe these measures can promote safer participation in digital platforms with parental supervision while supporting the long-term development of the sector. Mohammed Al Zarouni, Director of Strategic Planning at NMA, told Khaleej Times that the law is primarily aimed at preventing the exploitation of children under 15.
He expressed his view that the changes would be positive because 'more young people can start using social media under the supervision of their parents.'
The proposed legislation is part of broader efforts to enhance child safety online and aligns with similar initiatives being implemented in countries such as Australia and certain European regions. Al Zarouni emphasized that the UAE is working to ensure its rules comply with international standards while considering feedback from parents and relevant bodies.
These statements were made at the TikTok UAE Forward event, attended by senior company executives in the region, as well as representatives from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) and the UAE government's Media Office. Mohammed Al Zarouni, Deputy General Manager of the Information and Digital Government Sector at TDRA, separately noted that the government's goal is to strike a balance between regulation and the further expansion of digital platforms.
He stated that there are legislative requirements that must be met and considers this the 'first line of defense.' He added that their task is to complement the growth occurring on digital platforms by ensuring mutual understanding between the government's need for societal safety and entrepreneurs using these platforms, while also helping to promote the growth of the platforms themselves.
Al Zarouni also noted that supporting reliable digital platforms will ultimately contribute to achieving the UAE's broader ambitions in the digital economy. According to a report presented at the event, TikTok contributed 1.1 billion AED in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the UAE economy and supported approximately 7,000 jobs. Furthermore, it was found that over 70,000 small and medium-sized enterprises actively advertise on TikTok in the UAE, and more than 10,000 entrepreneurs, including 3,500 women and 1,400 Emiratis, reported starting their businesses through this platform.
