In the island province of Hainan in southern China, futuristic developments are moving from laboratories to reality in the fields of advanced technology and affordable healthcare. This has been made possible by the preferential policy operating in the Hainan Free Trade Port.
Bionics and Scientific Achievements
At Hainan University, a team led by Professor Huang Zhong created a biomimetic fish capable of covering a distance of 50 meters in under 20 seconds, surpassing the previous world record of 22.16 seconds. Robots inspired by living organisms such as fish and snakes have the potential to operate in extreme conditions, including deep-sea exploration and radiation-exposed industrial zones.
Huang suggests developing brain-computer interfaces that can enable a symbiosis between humans and machines, potentially assisting stroke patients or allowing remote surgery in deep water. He also noted that the Free Trade Port provides an ideal platform for testing open data and marine robotic systems.
Affordable Therapy and Pharmaceuticals
Meanwhile, a biotechnology company based in the capital, Haikou, has localized cartilage regeneration therapy, which was previously considered irreversible. This has made treatment more accessible to ordinary patients by reducing costs.
The team converted beef cartilage into a decellularized matrix and demonstrated that this material effectively supports cartilage cell growth. According to Zeng Shen, founder of Susheng Biotech, restoration was confirmed in over 60 patients using this material. He emphasized that the cost of the material, which is about $1000 (slightly more than 6700 yuan) abroad, is now available in Hainan for approximately $68 (460 yuan) per gram.
This significant price reduction is partly due to the abolition of import duties and a corporate tax rate of 15%, which is one of the lowest in the world. Zeng reported that international patients from the Middle East and Southeast Asia are already coming for treatment.
Innovations in Drug Manufacturing
A local pharmaceutical company in Hainan brought a chemotherapy protection drug to market just 17 months after its approval in the US, significantly faster than the standard timeframe of three to five years. Localizing production allowed the drug's price to drop from $1400 (close to 9500 yuan) in the US to $68 (460 yuan) in China.
Yu Qingzhu, Chairman of Simcere, stated that in 2025, the company signed an intellectual property export agreement worth $5 billion with an American firm, effectively using Hainan as its gateway to global markets.
From deep-sea biomimetic modeling to cellular regeneration and cross-border pharmaceutical innovations, Hainan demonstrates that institutional reforms and scientific research can go hand in hand, turning breakthroughs into accessible benefits for patients worldwide.
