China stated on Friday its firm disagreement and resolute condemnation of the UK's decision to nationalize British Steel, while also calling for fair treatment for Chinese firms operating in the UK.
China's Stance on Nationalization
A representative from China's Ministry of Commerce noted that the British side forcibly seized the company under the pretext of national security, completely ignoring Jingye's contribution to the economy and society of the UK.
China emphasized that this step seriously harms the legitimate rights and interests of Jingye and significantly undermines the confidence of Chinese companies in investing in the UK.
Demands and Next Steps
Beijing announced that it will closely monitor developments and support Chinese enterprises in defending their rights. Furthermore, China strongly urged the UK to fulfill its obligations under the investment protection agreement between China and the UK.
For its part, Jingye stated its intention to seek full compensation for its investments in the company. The UK government clarified that the amount of any compensation will be determined as a result of an independent assessment.
