To use these funds, members must submit a corresponding proposal. This is where governance comes into play: holders of native DAO tokens have the right to vote on these proposals, and the more tokens they hold, the greater their voting weight.

The token-based model is the most common: holding a token grants voting rights in the project. Although DAOs are transforming business, they have their pros and cons. Among the advantages is transparency: all transactions and governance decisions are recorded on the blockchain, allowing anyone to independently verify every action in real time. Decentralization is also important, as it distributes power among members and reduces single points of failure.
Other benefits include global participation, accessible to anyone with internet access, automatic rule execution via smart contracts, which reduces administrative overhead, and community ownership, which ensures direct member involvement in decisions and increases a sense of shared responsibility.
However, there are disadvantages. Smart contract risks can lead to irreversible financial losses if errors are discovered. Furthermore, decisions in DAOs are often made slower due to the necessity of all participants voting. Legal uncertainty across different jurisdictions also poses a risk to participants and developers. Finally, the dominance of large token holders can allow them to significantly influence the market.
The barrier to entry for DAOs has proven surprisingly low. To start, one needs to find an area of interest (such as DeFi or NFTs), acquire a crypto wallet (like MetaMask or Phantom), and purchase the necessary governance tokens. Most DAOs conduct daily discussions on Discord or Telegram, where one can learn about the entire community. Following this, one should monitor active proposals and vote on them on platforms like Snapshot.

Instead of a traditional order book, DEXs use liquidity pools. Users contribute pairs of coins to a common pool, and an Automated Market Maker (AMM) algorithm sets prices based on supply and demand. DeFi lending works similarly to a bank loan, but the process is less cumbersome. A user deposits crypto assets into a protocol like Aave or Compound, and other users can borrow against those assets. The smart contract automatically manages interest rates, collateral requirements, and repayment. Borrowers usually have to provide more crypto assets than they borrow, which protects lenders in case of sharp price drops. In return, lenders receive interest paid directly to their wallets, often at rates higher than those offered by banks.
Staking in DeFi involves locking up coins in a protocol to support its operation and earn rewards. In Proof-of-Stake blockchains, such as Ethereum, stakers help validate transactions and receive a portion of network fees. Protocols like Lido have made this accessible without deep technical knowledge: users deposit ETH and receive stETH—a liquid token representing their stake—while continuing to earn rewards. Lido currently holds about $27.5 billion in TVL, making it the largest individual DeFi protocol by this metric.
Yield farming goes further: traders move their cryptocurrencies between different platforms to maximize profit. Typically, they deposit capital into liquidity pools, receiving special reward tokens in return, and then stake these new assets in other dApps to maximize returns. Although this announcement was met with approval in some circles, it raised questions among communities and organizations that continue to face inadequate sanitation conditions in schools.
Specifically, at Mabentseni Junior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape, the organization PASETA, which the author presents as their representative, contacted the minister's office regarding sanitation issues at the school. The problem was acknowledged, and they were assured it would be addressed. Nevertheless, while the situation on the ground remains unresolved, the country was presented with a triumphant report.

The DA once ridiculed this habit, but now risks inheriting it. For a party that often champions constitutional values, such a remark from the highest guarantor of the Constitution carries significant symbolic weight.
The issue of accountability is also raised. A large part of the DA's reputation was built on the principle that leaders must be answerable for their actions. However, the recent decision not to initiate disciplinary action against party leader John Steenhuisen has raised uncomfortable questions about how easily accountability can be achieved when it comes to top leadership. South Africans are once again witnessing a familiar scenario, albeit in a different party.
One cannot forget the statements concerning the firm of former DA leader Tony Leon and allegations of access, influence, and political networks. These accusations remain a subject of debate, and premature conclusions should be avoided. Nevertheless, this story touches upon a sensitive theme, reminding us of what the DA long criticized in others—the perception that power often belongs to a narrow circle of insiders. The real danger for the DA is not that it becomes the ANC. No party can adopt another's history. The danger lies in it becoming what it warned against for decades: a political organization convinced of its own virtue due to its intentions. Any political movement ultimately understands that power is not a mirror, but a test. For a long time, the DA looked into the mirror, pointing at the reflection of the ANC. Now, however, the mirror is turning, and what it shows may become the greatest challenge for the party.
