This month, Khoi Tech completed an intensive six-month AI readiness acceleration program organized by Disraptor with funding from Telkom FutureMakers and the UK - South Africa Tech Hub, supported by the British High Commission. The company became one of ten Afrocentric tech enterprises in South Africa selected for the program. The program culminated at London Tech Week, where the company stood alongside global innovators.
The beginning of this journey was marked in 2024 when Khoi Tech was accepted into the BRIC Business Council. This experience was not just recognition but a starting point. Working among business leaders who discuss trade, technology, and industrial policy in developing economies led Moloi to ask a more complex question: can the country compete when the rules of global business are being rewritten by data, automation, and AI?
This question defined all subsequent decisions: Khoi Tech shifted from manufacturing connected devices to implementing AI, predictive analytics, and intelligent analytics across all its products. These solutions cover remote patient monitoring, occupational health and safety, mining safety, driver fatigue management, and employee well-being. They are concerned about children's safety in schools, the infiltration of drugs into communities, unreliable public infrastructure, healthcare, and crime. Good governance begins with understanding these daily realities, as politics only matters when it improves people's lives.
One of the main weaknesses of modern politics is the tendency to think only until the next election. Great nations are built by leaders who plan twenty or thirty years ahead. Singapore was not built in five years, China's economic transformation took decades, and South Korea consistently invested in education and industrial development. Rwanda engages in long-term national planning. Successful states create institutions that outlive individual leaders. South Africa must adopt the same approach so that national development does not depend solely on personalities but is based on a shared vision that withstands changes in political leadership.
Perhaps our biggest mistake is asking if we have good leaders before deciding what leadership should look like. Before choosing leaders, the qualities they must possess need to be agreed upon. South Africa needs leaders with impeccable integrity who understand the economy as deeply as they understand politics. They must be able to unite diverse communities around a common national goal, welcome accountability rather than fearing it, make evidence-based decisions, and invest in the next generation, not in short-term popularity. Most importantly, there is a need for leaders who genuinely understand that every political decision ultimately affects the families around the dinner table across the country.

During the annual Youth Day, South Africa frequently calls on young people to become entrepreneurs. Although entrepreneurship is a vital avenue for addressing youth unemployment in the country, critics argue that this approach has become overly simplistic and detached from the realities required to build sustainable businesses.
Despite acknowledging the importance of entrepreneurial education, simply completing a course or seminar is insufficient. The ability to run a business differs significantly from the actual capacity to build one. Ambition alone is not enough if founders lack the necessary education, experience, networks, and supportive environment to create long-term companies.
It is crucial to move away from romanticizing those who abandon their studies for a startup, claiming it is a reliable development strategy. A more realistic, albeit slower, path involves completing formal schooling, developing literacy and numeracy, pursuing further education, gaining work experience, understanding customer needs, and learning how organizations function before attempting to build on a solid foundation.
The country requires more builders and specialists capable of solving problems, rather than merely individuals forced into survival mode due to labor market failures. While survival-oriented businesses deserve respect, they differ from enterprises focused on growth. A person selling merely to survive is not in the same position as a founder creating a company capable of hiring hundreds of employees.
According to World Bank data, small and medium-sized enterprises account for about 90% of all businesses and over half of global employment. In South Africa, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) estimates that small businesses provide between 50% and 60% of the workforce and contribute at least 34% to GDP. However, too few small firms transition into medium-sized employers, which the country urgently needs.
Part of the issue is that growing companies are burdened too early with requirements typical of large, mature corporations. Amendments to South Africa's small business definitions classify micro-enterprises (up to 10 employees), small enterprises (11 to 50), and medium enterprises (51 to 250), with varying revenue thresholds depending on the sector. Compliance should not become an obstacle for a promising company when hiring its next ten employees.
Similar principles apply to finance, procurement, and networks, as strong entrepreneurial ecosystems are built not only on motivation. As shown by the Startup Genome Global Report on Startup Ecosystems, competitive ecosystems depend on the interplay of funding, talent, market reach, connectivity, and knowledge. This means young founders need practical pathways to market entry, mentors who understand scaling, early customers willing to take risks, as well as access to capital and networks that allow promising companies to grow.
Young entrepreneurs also need higher-quality role models: not just famous founders, tender entrepreneurs, or Silicon Valley myths, but authoritative South African builders who solve real problems, hire people, serve customers honestly, and create useful products or services.
As stated in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, the concept of 'social entrepreneurship' may mask a simple truth: much of honest and productive entrepreneurship is already social activity when it creates value, jobs, and improves services upon which the population depends. This is the kind of discussion that should take place on Youth Day, because entrepreneurship will help develop South Africa's future leaders only if we stop viewing it as a slogan and start seeing it as a system that needs to be built.
Young people do not need another call for intensified struggle. They need schools that build competencies, universities that introduce ideas and technologies, workplaces that provide experience, investors willing to support them, worthy examples to emulate, and a government that steps aside, giving small businesses room to grow.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is often viewed in extreme terms: either as a threat that will replace workers or as a tool that facilitates the next wave of growth and productivity. However, the actual picture is likely to be more complex. The potential impact in South Africa will probably differ from what is observed in economies like the US, although developments there may offer some clues about what to expect locally.
Studies by the International Monetary Fund show that about 40% of global employment is somehow affected by AI. In developed countries, this figure rises to approximately 60%. Goldman Sachs predicts that over the next decade, AI will affect around 300 million jobs worldwide.
Interestingly, we are not currently seeing mass job losses. Instead, AI appears to be transforming how people enter the labor market and advance their careers. The greatest pressure is felt in the service sector and at entry-level positions, where companies may be more cautious about creating new roles than before.
The impact also depends on the composition of the workforce. Positions that are highly administrative, repetitive, routine, and process-based are most at risk. Conversely, higher-level positions seem more protected. These include jobs where experience, judgment, and oversight are important, especially those related to evaluating AI-generated results and determining their accuracy and relevance.
There is also the argument that while AI may eliminate some jobs, the technology will likely create new ones. Roles such as programmers, engineers, and process developers may benefit from these changes.
In the US, graduate absorption has slowed down as companies have been less active in creating new vacancies than before. A study by IESE Business School showed that the wages of junior employees in companies affected by AI decreased after the launch of ChatGPT. Even for those who find jobs, wage growth has been unfavorable.
In a country like South Africa, where the economy already faces a significant youth unemployment problem, many graduates are already struggling to find meaningful first opportunities. If AI reduces the need for entry-level positions or slows their creation, it could further complicate the transition from education to work.
This is both a social and a business issue. Many organizations naturally invest in technology to improve margins, but they also need to look beyond short-term efficiency. Succession planning, knowledge transfer, and capacity building remain critical. If businesses stop attracting and developing young talent internally, they risk weakening the very pipeline that will provide future leaders and oversee increasingly complex systems.
The same applies to how AI is beginning to merge with robotics. In manufacturing, the future is not just robotics, but the integration of robotics and AI. This shift may increase the demand for highly skilled technical oversight while reducing the number of routine positions. For a country already grappling with inequality, the issue shifts from jobs displaced by technology to how workers prepare and equip themselves for the roles that technology creates.
For workers, AI technical literacy is important, but human capabilities that are harder to automate—including judgment, relationship building, accountability, and the ability to interpret results in context—are equally vital.
From an investment perspective, it is important to seek out companies that do not focus solely on margin expansion. There is a natural limit to cost savings, whereas growth is less constrained. AI strategies should increasingly be evaluated based on their contribution to revenue growth. The winners will not be the companies that automate the most, but those that use AI for growth while maintaining judgment, accountability, and the talent pipeline that sustains the business over time.
