Community organizations and businesses joined forces with POST as part of the Mandela Day celebration to provide warmth, dignity, and joy to children from vulnerable populations, as well as adults with physical and intellectual disabilities during one of the coldest winters in recent years.
As a result of this joint project, hundreds of blankets, medical kits, hygiene items, winter accessories, hot meals, and festive packages are planned to be distributed among 250 children in the Fraser and Tongaat areas, as well as among residents of Wentworth Cheshire Homes.
Partners in this initiative include DSK Group, Ramsamy International, Chinmaya Mission, and Venk-Pac.
Daniel Chettiar, founder of DSK Group, donated blankets, hats, gloves, and festive packages. He emphasized that as an NGO, they understand the urgent need for assistance and exchange, which is the foundation of their work. However, he also noted the strength of collaboration to achieve broader reach and sustainability.
Chettiar expressed pride in participating in the POST initiative, highly valuing its scope and the work done. He added that he was meticulous in choosing every donated item to ensure it was both useful and meaningful. The donations included blankets, soap, snack boxes, hats, and gloves.
He expressed hope that the aid would be received with love and care, serving as a reminder that every life is important and noticed. Chettiar also mentioned that all DSK sponsors started with modest conditions, so they dedicate their lives to community service, and this year they decided to expand their efforts to these organizations.
Ronel Mudli, DSK's blanket collection coordinator, reported that the donors' response was overwhelming. They collected over 350 blankets for those in need at both Cheshire Homes and Fraser.
Mudli noted that due to the extremely cold winter, blankets were the most requested item, as recipients know they are cared for.
Kovilan Ramsamy from Ramsamy International also supported the initiative by donating medical kits to enhance the dignity and well-being of members of vulnerable communities. He stated that the company has always marked Mandela Day by helping its community, and the donation of medical kits is intended to bring dignity to the sick and those without access to healthcare.
Venk-Pac played a key role: Ricky Naidu paid for the tailoring of 200 blankets using material provided by Tongaat community activist Suji Govender. Naidu expressed a desire to keep these people warm this winter, noting that despite 32 years since the end of apartheid, people continue to suffer in the country. He also mentioned that money previously donated to him for blankets was lost, so this time he decided to support a proven initiative.
POST editor, Yogesh Nair, thanked the sponsors for their generosity and expressed confidence that the Mandela Day initiative will bring warmth and love to those in need this winter.
As part of the celebration of Mandela Day, which is observed annually on July 18th in honor of the life and legacy of the late former president Nelson Mandela, the Sibaya Community Trust in Durban implemented three infrastructure projects.
The South African government declared Mandela Day as a call to action for everyone—people, communities, and organizations—to reflect on Mandela's principles and values. Mandela himself called for the fight against poverty, suffering, and deprivation, stating that 'it is in your hands to make our world better for all, especially for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized.'
The Trust completed these three projects across KwaZulu-Natal, stating that they will directly improve the lives of hundreds of beneficiaries. These include people with disabilities, students with special needs, and cancer patients who require temporary accommodation during treatment.
Vivian Reddy, founder and chairperson of the Sibaya Community Trust, noted that investing in dignity, accessibility, compassion, and hope is a tribute to Madiba's outstanding legacy. One project involved repairing and replacing over twenty windows at the Merewent Cheshire Home, which supports people with disabilities. The Trust also carried out significant renovations and upgrades to this facility, installing steel railings to enhance the safety, accessibility, and mobility of residents.
Furthermore, two new sanitation blocks were built at the West Park Special Needs School. These structures provide safe, accessible, and dignified hygiene conditions for students with various physical and intellectual impairments. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in Durban received an updated building to house a new six-bed ward. This ward serves as a temporary refuge for cancer patients traveling from remote areas to receive treatment at nearby hospitals.
Reddy emphasized that this compassionate initiative will help alleviate the emotional and financial burden experienced by patients and their families during difficult times. She added that for over two decades, the Sibaya Community Trust has remained true to its mission of transforming lives through sustainable community development. To date, the Trust has invested over 280 million rand in social upliftment initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal.
On July 18, citizens in South Africa will once again observe Mandela Day, remembering not only the global figure but also the lawyer who believed that the law should serve the underprivileged, marginalized, and forgotten segments of the population. Although Mandela Day is often associated with food parcel drives, school visits, and clean-up campaigns, beneath this veneer of service lies a deeper question: is the country truly upholding his vision of equality and dignity for all?
One of the most evident ways to answer this question is by focusing on socio-economic rights. These include rights to housing, healthcare, and social security. These rights are viewed not as luxuries, but as daily components of life lived with self-respect.
The history of human rights in South Africa is a long, painful, and unfinished process. For centuries, the law was used not to protect people, but to control them. Colonial expansion dispossessed communities of their land, and apartheid legislation entrenched racial segregation, restricted movement, and deprived Black citizens of basic freedoms. The Sharpeville massacre in 1960 exposed the brutality of a system that considered the lives of Black people expendable.
In that era, the concept of human rights in its modern sense was absent from the legal order. Nevertheless, lawyers began to resist, refusing to accept the established situation. They defended political prisoners, challenged warrantless arrests, and used the courts, however limited they were, to expose injustice. This work was often dangerous and rarely recognized, yet it laid the groundwork for the idea that the law could be reclaimed, rather than feared.
By the late 1980s, legal activism had become a significant force. Public interest lawyers, along with Black legal associations and community justice movements, began speaking a common language focused on equality, accountability, and rights. When Mandela was released from prison in 1990, he was surrounded by lawyers who had supported him for decades. Their belief in the rule of law helped shape subsequent negotiations.
The democratic breakthrough of 1994 placed human rights at the center of South Africa's new constitutional structure. The Bill of Rights became the bedrock of the nation's democracy, ensuring the protection of civil and political liberties while recognizing socio-economic rights, including access to housing, healthcare, food, water, and social security. Few constitutions in the world achieve this level.
This step was a conscious choice based on the understanding that apartheid was not just a political but also an economic system that denied people the ability to live with dignity. Human rights lawyers played a crucial role in drafting this foundation. They advocated for a Constitution that would not merely prevent future abuses but actively redress past injustices. They also contributed to the creation of Chapter 9 institutions, including the South African Human Rights Commission, which is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights and fostering a culture of accountability.
The work of human rights lawyers did not end with the signing of the Constitution. In the following years, they translated constitutional promises into reality through strategic litigation. Landmark cases changed the trajectory of the country's development. Among these are the Grootboom judgment, which affirmed the right to housing; the treatment campaign case, which forced the government to provide antiretroviral treatment; and the Khoza case, which secured access to social grants for permanent residents. Each such ruling reinforced the principle that rights are enforceable, not merely symbolic.
In KwaZulu-Natal, this work took on particular urgency. Communities facing dysfunctional municipalities, unsafe water supplies, overcrowded clinics, and persistent inequality often relied on public interest lawyers to challenge illegal decisions and demand compliance with constitutional obligations. In many instances, the judicial process was the only effective tool to compel government action.
Human rights lawyers also play a vital role in preserving historical memory. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission relied on lawyers who helped victims tell their stories and seek justice. Today, as South Africa engages with international bodies, human rights lawyers continue to champion Mandela's insistence that dignity must be protected both domestically and internationally.
However, the mere existence of human rights lawyers does not guarantee a just society. They often work in under-resourced institutions, subject to political influence, or operate slowly. Court victories can be undermined by weak enforcement, while many communities continue to struggle to access legal aid. As many South Africans know well, rights mean little if they do not translate into food on the table, water from the tap, and safety on the streets.
This is why Mandela Day must be more than just a charity ritual. It must serve as a reminder that human rights are a daily practice, not an annual event. Mandela understood that dignity requires more than good intentions; it demands structural change. A food parcel can help for one day, but a functioning social security system provides lifelong protection. Cleaning a schoolyard has its value, but ensuring adequate sanitation and safe classrooms in every school is justice.
Mandela Day must also prompt us to ask more complex questions: Are our laws serving marginalized groups? Are our institutions protecting the vulnerable? Are we supporting the lawyers and activists standing between power and abuse? Are we strengthening oversight bodies that monitor the government?
If we can honestly answer these questions and act according to those answers, then Mandela Day will become more than just a moment of remembrance. It will become part of the long journey toward dignity that Mandela began alongside countless human rights lawyers.
South Africa's path in human rights remains far from complete. While the Constitution continues to embody a powerful promise, Mandela Day reminds us that fulfilling that promise requires more than 67 minutes. It requires a constant commitment to justice, accountability, and the conviction that the law must serve those who need it most.

Simply sitting opposite an unfamiliar adult in a therapist's office is difficult enough, and in court, where they might be asked to recount traumatic events to strangers, it seems almost impossible.
In such situations, animal therapy can have an exceptional impact. At the Jelly Beanz Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting families and children affected by trauma, the therapy dog Toffee Beanz has become a beloved member of the team. She was carefully chosen at five weeks old due to her calm temperament and specifically trained for this work. Now she spends her days with therapists, helping children feel safe enough to begin opening up.
Children who struggle to trust adults often react differently to a gentle, non-judgmental dog. Stroking soft fur, feeling a warm head on their lap, or simply being in the same space as a calm companion can reduce anxiety and create a sense of security that words alone sometimes fail to achieve.
Recently, Toffee accompanied a child she had been supporting in therapy to court, providing comfort during an emotionally charged process. This incident sparked important discussions about how emotional support animals could enhance trauma-informed approaches within the South African justice system.
Toffee's time in court was aimed at continuing one child's healing process and exploring ways to make court proceedings less frightening for vulnerable young witnesses in the future. As Edith Kriel explains, the goal is not for Toffee to be present at every hearing, but to help pave the way for more child-friendly methods of testimony support.
Therapy dogs are only part of a much broader picture. Across the country, guide dogs and other service dogs help people with disabilities navigate the world with greater confidence and independence. Although their tasks differ, these wonderful animals share an important mission of promoting fuller participation of people in daily life.
Behind every working dog is immense teamwork. Years of careful breeding, behavioral assessment, socialization, specialized training, and constant veterinary care prepare dogs for the duties they will undertake. Organizations like the South African Guide Dog Association rely on volunteers, donors, and corporate partners to continue this transformative work. Among these partners is Dotsure, which helps cover veterinary costs and training for future guides, and also offers pet insurance for assistance dogs.
Kindness is easy to measure in grand gestures, yet it is often found in quieter moments. A volunteer dedicating a year to raising a future guide; a therapist patiently talking to a child; or a golden retriever resting its head on small knees until a frightened child is ready to speak. These moments may seem ordinary on their own, but together they create something extraordinary. On Mandela Day, we are reminded that support comes in many forms, and even the gentlest act of care can help someone find the confidence for the next step.
