Some areas of the United Arab Emirates experienced rainfall on Friday, July 3rd, which provided a welcome relief from the intense summer heat for residents.
Recent Rains and Forecasts
Video footage published by the Storm Center shows rain sweeping across the eastern coast towards the mountains of Fujairah and Khor Fakkan. The sky was covered with dark, overcast clouds, indicating the possibility of further precipitation in the region. Another video clip shows the downpours gradually intensifying, reducing visibility.
This recent rain occurred just a few weeks after similar weather events recorded on June 14th, when it also rained in parts of the country. Video from the Storm Center at that time showed the downpours moving through the Eastern Region, causing waterfalls in the mountainous areas of Khor Fakkan.
Meteorological Warnings
The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had previously forecast that following the rains on June 14th, new precipitation would occur in the eastern region. Rain was predicted for Wednesday, June 24th, under clear or partly cloudy conditions, with a probability of convective clouds bringing rain eastward by evening. Overnight and on Thursday morning, high humidity with a possibility of fog was expected over some coastal areas.
Weather Conditions in the Region
Rains in the eastern region of the UAE, especially in Fujairah and the adjacent mountainous areas, are not uncommon in the summer, which is linked to the country's typical experience of low monsoon pressure from India. Nevertheless, the country occasionally faces more intense and destructive weather phenomena.
Heavy Rains in March
One of the strongest rainfall episodes of the season was recorded on March 25th, when storms turned the usually clear sky into dense cloud cover and heavy downpours, flooding streets and slowing traffic in several emirates. Al Tawaiyen city recorded the highest amount of precipitation—47.9 mm, followed by Al Marjan with 39.7 mm. Khor Fakkan received 33.3 mm, and Hatam Al Shaklah registered 31.6 mm, while Port Khor Fakkan recorded 28.3 mm of precipitation.
The storms caused damage in several places: trees were uprooted and fell onto cars, particularly in Ajman. Residents came together to clear the streets and ensure safety during the sudden flood. Emirates Airlines advised passengers to arrive at least two hours before their flight, as adverse weather conditions persisted in Dubai until March 26th and 27th.
