A large-scale interdisciplinary study conducted by Canadian scientists has revealed a link between residing in affluent areas of the province of Ontario and an increased risk of tumor development in children. The analysis covered data from approximately 2.3 million children between 1999 and 2023, and the results were published in JAMA Network Open.
The scientists studied the influence of socioeconomic factors on childhood cancer incidence. A research group led by Maria Chiu from the University of Toronto conducted a cross-analysis of the data. The marginalization index was used to determine the socioeconomic status of the area, which took into account four components: material resources (reflecting the general socioeconomic level), income, education level, and family housing quality; as well as individual indicators of housing instability, unemployment rate, and migration.
During the entire observation period, 9063 cases of cancer were registered among patients whose average age at diagnosis was five years old. Initial analysis showed that the highest frequency of tumors was observed among children whose areas were characterized by better material resources, low housing instability, and low unemployment. Conversely, higher morbidity was recorded in areas with a high concentration of immigrants.
After multivariate adjustment, it became clear that children living in the most affluent areas in terms of material resources had a 15% higher risk of cancer compared to children from the least affluent areas. This correlation increased as one moved from the first to the fifth quintile of affluence. The most pronounced association involved hematological and solid tumors that did not affect the central nervous system.
It was found that a reduction in housing instability contributed to an eight percent decrease in morbidity. At the same time, the migration rate and unemployment did not have a significant impact on the risk of developing tumors in children. Nevertheless, it was noted that the frequency of central nervous system tumors was significantly lower in areas with low unemployment.
Although the study sample has geographical limitations, the data obtained indicate a significant impact of social and economic conditions on pediatric oncology. The authors emphasized the need for further research to clarify the biological mechanisms behind this relationship.
A separate study conducted at the British biobank demonstrated that every additional hour spent in a sedentary position increases the risk of cancer death by an average of nine percent. Replacing one hour of sitting with moderate physical activity can reduce this risk by 12%. These results were published in the journal PLoS Medicine.
Spain has activated a heightened alert status in Andalusia after the detection of the West Nile virus in two traps set in two municipalities. One of these traps was part of the monitoring system of Seville province, the regional capital, whose government announced the introduction of a state of alert.

The delegation also visited the Interdisciplinary Training Center for Innovative Surgical Technologies, where they studied the system of practical surgeon training using simulation equipment and anatomical materials.
At the Moscow Laboratory Research Center, the delegation was shown robotic laboratory diagnostics, a three-tier laboratory network model, and a digital system for managing research data and test results. At the conclusion of the negotiations, the parties agreed to prepare a roadmap for further cooperation, including the implementation of joint pilot projects involving relevant experts.
