The Ibero-American Architecture Journeys were organized by the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture and are curated by Professor Fredy Massad. The main purpose of this event is to provide a detailed analysis of professional practice, construction, and architectural research in Ibero-America, considering the vast range of social, cultural, economic, and territorial contexts present in the area.
The program aims to examine how architecture can respond to the major challenges of the 21st century, starting from diverse local realities. The initiative is open to students, faculty, and architecture professionals, seeking to stimulate both academic and professional exchange on contemporary architecture in Ibero-America.
The Journeys will take place on July 23rd and 24th in the Salón de Grados, with set times from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The program will consist of lectures and a final dialogue session. On the first day, there will be three 50-minute conferences, while the second day will feature two 50-minute conferences and a 60-minute dialogue session, the latter divided into 45 minutes of conversation and an open time for public questions and answers.
Confirmed speakers include Gabriel Biagioni, representing Argentina; Cássio Sauer, from Brazil; José Cubilla, from Paraguay; TATÚ Arquitectura, from Uruguay; and Román Bauer Arquitectos, from Peru. The event will be held in the Sala de Grados, located at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, at Immaculada, 22, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Max von Werz Arquitectos, working in partnership with Maurici Mesta Arquitectos, conceived the museography project for the exhibition titled Constellations and Drifts: Art of Latin America, which features works from the FEMSA Collection.
The show officially opened on March 19, 2026. The exhibition venue is the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey (MARCO). Visitors can appreciate the exhibition until August 9, 2026.
Barcelona, which will host the UIA World Congress of Architects for the second time in its history, thirty years after the 1996 event, is transforming into a platform for reflection not only on architecture but also on the constantly changing conditions within its functioning sphere.
The 2026 Congress is titled 'Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition' and was developed by a team of six curators: Pau Baheta, Maria Girame, Mariana Benedito, Tomeu Ramis, Pau Sarkelly, and Carmen Torres. This event expands the discussion beyond the urban scale, focusing on global issues.
Architecture is viewed through the prism of ecological, social, political, and material systems, rather than being perceived as an isolated discipline. On the opening day of the Congress, the publication ArchDaily conducted an interview with Mariana Benedito and Carmen Torres, two members of the curatorial team.
During the interview, they discussed how the current edition reinterprets the architectural heritage of Barcelona, why uncertainty has become a central element of architectural thought, and what expectations the organizers have regarding what participants can gain from this event.
