Western Cape Reservoir Levels Recovering Thanks to Winter Rains

Thanks to winter precipitation, water levels in the Western Cape's reservoirs continue to rise, bringing hopeful news to residents and tourists. According to IOL reports, seasonal rains are replenishing supplies across the province.

Water Supply Status

According to the latest data from the Department of Water and Sanitation, Cape Town's water supply system has reached 77.63% of its capacity, an increase from 76.94% the previous week. Overall, there is an improvement in water reserves across the province, which have risen from 77.97% to 78.84% due to consistent winter rainfall feeding the catchment areas.

The province's largest reservoir, the Theewaterskloof dam, has reached 77.78% capacity. This is a significant improvement compared to 63.06% at the same time last year. Since this dam is the primary water source for most of the Western Cape, its recovery is a positive sign heading into the second half of winter.

Several smaller reservoirs are also approaching or exceeding full capacity. The Steenbras Upper dam is currently overflowing at 102.17%, while the Wemmershoek dam is nearly at its limit with a reading of 99.95%, highlighting the impact of stable seasonal rainfall.

Positive Trend Outside Cape Town

The positive trend extends far beyond the Cape Town metro area. In the Olifants-Doorn water management area, the Clanwilliam dam has reached 96.00% capacity, more than double the 41.42% recorded during the same period last year.

The situation is also improving along Garden Road. The Akkerkloof dam in Knysna has risen to 41% capacity, aided by active pumping from the city's balancing dams following recent rains.

Importance of Water Conservation

Despite the encouraging figures, the Department of Water and Sanitation reminds residents that water conservation remains critically important. The Provincial Head of the Western Cape, Ntombizanele Bila-Mupariva, welcomed the rise in reservoir levels but stressed that the goal is to maximize reserves before the dry summer season arrives.

She noted that water restrictions will only be reviewed as reservoir levels approach full capacity. Although the province is in a much stronger position than last year, officials maintain that responsible water use remains key to securing supplies for the coming warm months.

The weather will start warm and humid early in the morning, and during the day, it will become hot and humid in most areas. Extreme heat is expected in southern Egypt, but by evening and early morning, the temperature will drop again to warm and humid.

Chance of Precipitation

EMA predicts a small chance of low cloud formation over scattered areas of the North Coast, Lower Egypt, Greater Cairo, and Canal Cities. This may lead to light, unobtrusive rain in some of these areas.

Wave Warning

Satellite images show periodic wind activity in most areas, which will help cool the air at night. Nevertheless, strong winds of 30 to 40 km/h will soon hit a number of Mediterranean beaches, including Sallum, Matrouh, Alamein, Alexandria, Baltim, and Port Said. This will cause wave heights to rise to 1.5-2 meters.

According to the data, the maximum recorded temperature in Greater Cairo was 35°C, 31°C on the Northwest Coast, 33°C on the Northeast Coast, 37°C in Upper Egypt North, and 42°C in Upper Egypt South.

Night temperatures will be 28–33 degrees, and daytime temperatures—41–46 degrees.

Variable cloudiness without precipitation is forecasted in Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya regions. The wind from the east will blow at a speed of 7–12 m/s, with a probability of intensifying up to 13–18 m/s due to dust storms. Night temperatures will be 25–30 degrees, and daytime temperatures—41–46 degrees.

In Andijan, Namangan, and Fergana regions, the weather will be slightly cloudy or variable, without precipitation. The wind from the east will blow at a speed of 5–10 m/s. Night temperatures are expected to be 23–28 degrees, and daytime temperatures—38–43 degrees.

In the mountainous areas of the republic, variable cloudiness or changing weather without precipitation is also forecasted. The wind from the east will blow at a speed of 7–12 m/s, with the possibility of intensifying up to 13–18 m/s. Night temperatures will be 15–20 degrees, and daytime temperatures—30–35 degrees.
