The French club AS Béziers Hérault announced the death of Lukobo 'Bibo' Mqwedini, a 20-year-old player who previously represented the South African U18 national team. He passed away following a training session held in France.
Circumstances of Death
The player's front row, affectionately known as Bibo, felt unwell at the end of the morning training session at the Stade de la Gayonne. He was urgently transported to the hospital, where he died several hours later. French sources report that the cause of death may have been a heart attack, but official confirmation of the exact reason has not yet been received.
Career and Club Transfer
Mqwedini, a graduate of Wynberg Boys' High School in Cape Town, joined the Béziers academy before the 2025/26 season. The club highly regarded him as one of its most promising young players. He was slated for promotion to the starting lineup for the upcoming Pro D2 campaign, which begins in a few weeks, but he never made his debut with the first team.
Club and Community Reaction
The club president, title contender and former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad, announced the tragedy in a statement published on Friday evening. Skinstad noted that Lukobo quickly became a valuable member of the Red and Blues family, highlighting his dedication, kindness, and personal qualities that deeply impressed everyone at the club. He stated that the entire club is in mourning and deep shock over this heartbreaking loss.
The club asked for respect for the privacy of the family, teammates, and Bibo as they navigate this extremely difficult period of grief. Shortly after the announcement, support poured in from across French rugby. The French Professional Rugby Players' Union, Provale, expressed its support to the club and the Mqwedini family. The Béziers supporters' association, Rugbiterre, also sent condolences to the family, teammates, and club representative Saul Loggenberg, who was reportedly a mentor figure to the young South African in France.
Player Achievements
This 1.76m tall and 119kg tighthead established himself at Wynberg, where his performances earned him selection to the South African U18 national team. In a 2024 match between Wynberg and Bishops, which ended 35-8, his footwork helped create the final try, allowing the school to maintain its undefeated record. He moved to France last year after Béziers signed him to their academy. The club's Pro D2 season for 2026/27 will begin in the coming weeks.
