Studio Libeskind designs new high-density residential towers in Seoul, South Korea

The Daechi Ssangyong 1 Redevelopment Union is developing this project with support from Samsung C&T, with construction estimated to begin in 2027 and be completed in 2030.

Architectural Concept and Urban Integration

The firm's master plan was conceived to optimize apartment views, directing them towards Yangjae Stream, Tan Stream, and Daemo Mountain. The total project area covers approximately 233,400 m² and includes a central plaza of 15,000 m², dedicated leisure and social spaces, as well as a suspended community space distributed across three levels.

At the heart of the complex is an observation lounge facing Yangjae Stream, integrated with landscaping characterized by tiered green roofs that extend from the surrounding linear park into the site.

Design and Sustainability

The inspiration for the design of the new residential complex lies in the concept of 'Celestial,' aiming to establish the towers as an architectural landmark. The facade pattern was designed to create an appearance of rotation and ascent, altering its perception depending on the light and perspective throughout the day. All six towers utilize the same facade treatment, presenting themselves as a unified architectural composition.

Additionally, the envelope design incorporates photovoltaic panels integrated into the building itself (BIPV). Each residential unit features private facilities, with a clear height of 2.82 meters in the apartments, which aims to maximize natural light intake. The design team estimated that the community space will average approximately 13.2 m² per unit, a proportion considered high for residential developments in Gangnam.

Seoul Project Context

The work carried out by Studio Libeskind, HJ Design Partners, and SAMOO Architects & Engineers complements other urban redevelopment and high-density projects in Seoul. In mid-2025, the Foster + Partners office presented a project for IOTA Seoul I, a mixed-use development situated between Seoul Station and Namsan. Subsequently, in December 2025, the UNS office released images of SeoulOne, a master plan conceived as a new model of multigenerational housing that is already under construction. Finally, in March 2026, Heatherwick Studio showed the first images of its project to revitalize the Daegyo Apartments in Yeouido, renovating four residential buildings constructed in 1975.
