As the artificial intelligence (AI) industry rapidly grows and penetrates deeper into American life, survey results indicate that the majority of citizens view it negatively and advocate for seizing its wealth for the public good.
Reasons for Negative Attitude Towards AI
The negative attitude of Americans towards AI is attributed to the technology's threat to job reduction, environmental damage, and increased energy bills. Furthermore, all this damage is based on the use of stolen texts and works of art that are employed by large language models (LLMs) to simulate human activity.
Proposal for a Sovereign Fund
According to a national poll conducted by Verasight, a significant portion of Americans believes enough is enough and seeks change. A striking 69 percent of respondents supported the idea of forcing AI companies to transfer 50 percent of their shares to a public fund. This concept was endorsed by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
Sanders stated last month that this idea 'ensures that the economic benefits generated by AI will be used to improve the lives of all of us, and not just to make the wealthiest people in the world even richer.'
Mechanism and Examples
The measure, named the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act, stipulates that AI tech giants such as Anthropic and OpenAI must agree to a one-time tax of 50 percent on their shares. It is estimated that such a fund could reach a value of around $7 trillion and would be directed toward public needs.
Another sign of American public fatigue with AI was the decision by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to close and prohibit the construction of any new AI data centers in New York, as AI is unpopular among the working class nationwide, who feel the threats from this technology most acutely.
