Curimataí (MG) presents a scenario of a quiet village with waterfalls and preservation areas

This reality persists today in the district of Buenópolis, sustained not only by the waterfalls and the surrounding lush vegetation, but also by the small stream that crosses the center of the town, providing leisure for residents and visitors.

Origin of the name and importance of the river

The term Curimataí has indigenous origins and is associated with the curimatã, a type of silver-scaled fish. For this reason, both the Curimataí River and the district bearing the same name receive this designation. As a tributary of the Rio das Velhas, the waterway nourishes creeks and beautiful waterfalls nearby.

Main natural attractions

The Curimataí Waterfall, located at the foot of the Serra do Espinhaço, has a large volume of water that is impressive before depositing into a pool approximately four meters deep. The dark coloration of the water is attributed to the high concentration of minerals, making swimming extremely relaxing.

In contrast, the Simão Waterfall is located in a more distant and serene area, where the waterfall is punctuated by rocky obstacles, making it an ideal place to enjoy nature in peace.

Parks and conservation areas

In addition to the tranquility, the district hosts two important parks within its territorial limits, one on each side: the Sempre-vivas National Park and the Serra do Cabral State Park.

The Sempre-vivas National Park is a reserve of the Cerrado biome covering 124 thousand hectares. Its name derives from the beautiful ever-living flowers easily found in the region. The Serra do Cabral State Park has been listed by the state of Minas Gerais as a natural monument. Within this park, the mountain reaches altitudes ranging between 900 and 1300 meters above sea level. It protects several springs of streams and creeks that spread throughout the area, in addition to preserving at least one hundred archaeological sites with rock paintings.
