Researchers announced a significant advance in understanding the origin of life by detecting sugar molecules in the interstellar space of the Milky Way. These molecules are crucial for life on Earth as they provide cellular energy, participate in the formation of biological structures, and compose genetic materials such as DNA and RNA.
Although sugars have been present on Earth since the beginning, their origin remains a mystery. Some scientists suggest that part of these compounds may have been brought to the solar system through asteroids and comets, citing the asteroid Bennu as an example. However, a new investigation published on July 13 in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy proposed a different hypothesis: sugar could have formed in interstellar space itself before the emergence of Earth, through chemical processes.
If the ability of interstellar space to generate sugars is confirmed, it raises the probability that other planetary systems receive these essential compounds for the emergence of life. For Earth, the theory suggests that large quantities of sugar, possibly in the order of tens of tons, could have arrived on the planet during its formation.
The identification of these molecules required considerable technical effort. A team of scientists employed two radio telescopes located in Spain, the Yebes 40m and the IRAM 30m. These instruments, which function as large parabolic antennas, were used to monitor the center of the Milky Way in search of characteristic molecular signatures.
The researchers compared the radio signals emitted by the moving molecules with the patterns generated by known sugars in the laboratory. They observed that the pattern detected in a nebula at the center of the Milky Way, located approximately 26 thousand light-years from Earth, was compatible with erythritol, a type of sugar naturally found in raspberries.
Erythritol, which has four carbon atoms, eight hydrogen atoms, and four oxygen atoms, is not a simple sugar; smaller compounds with only three carbon atoms also exist. The results obtained were submitted to multiple reviews, both by the original team and by external scientists, and all confirmed the discovery. The next steps of the research will consist of verifying the presence of other sugar molecules in the interstellar environment.
European researchers studied the isotopic composition of the remains of fifteen people buried in Vilnius in the 13th or 14th centuries, in an area known as Civitas Rutenica. This area was a place of compact settlement for the Orthodox population. The analysis showed that among these individuals there might have been people who arrived from other places.
In particular, a young man was identified who was born hundreds of kilometers from the Lithuanian capital, presumably in the southwest of the territory of Old Rus'. These findings are presented in an article published in the journal Antiquity.
The city of Vilnius first appeared in written sources in 1323 as the capital of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, but it likely began to form as a multi-confessional center as early as the 13th century. Here, Lithuanians who adopted Christianity in 1387 coexisted with two Christian groups: a smaller Catholic group and a larger Orthodox group located in Civitas Rutenica.
Since 2005, archaeologists have been conducting research at a large cemetery in the Old Town of Vilnius, on the territory of the former Russian end. Over eight years of work, 532 graves and many bones from at least 250 people were discovered. Radiocarbon dating and artifact study confirmed that the cemetery was used in the second half of the 13th–14th centuries. Although cremation was practiced in pagan Lithuania, inhumation was used in this necropolis, and the presence of Christian symbols indicated the presence of Orthodox people.
Scientists from Belgium and Lithuania, including Rytis Jonaitis from the Institute of Lithuanian History, who supervised the excavations, expanded the study by adding the analysis of nitrogen, oxygen, strontium, and carbon isotopes in the remains of 15 medieval people to determine their diet and origin. The young man of about 18 years old from grave No. 311 generated the most scientific interest. Researchers found that his isotopic signature differed from the others. Furthermore, in childhood, his diet apparently contained a lot of millet, whereas in Lithuania at that time, hardier crops—rye and buckwheat—had already begun to be grown. These details convincingly indicate that he may have been born in the southwest of Old Rus', possibly in the lands of the Galician-Volhynian Principality.
It seems that the man from grave No. 214 may also have originated from the same region, as his strontium isotope ratio was similar to that of the young man from grave No. 311. Most of the analyzed women were likely local residents, with the exception of one lady from grave No. 312. This woman consumed a significant amount of millet or other C4-photosynthesis plants in childhood, and her strontium ratio was at the border of the local residents' range, which theoretically allows for a possible relationship with the young man from burial No. 311.
It was also noted that the strontium isotope ratio of two men from Vilnius matched the data of people from the vicinity of Kernave, an older Lithuanian capital where there was also an Orthodox community, which may indicate migrations between cities. Another person, buried in an unusual position in grave No. 226, had a distinctive isotopic signature similar to rituals practiced in southern Lithuania among the Yatvyags.

This shipment involves one of the most sophisticated processors from the American company and occurs within the context of the technological dispute between the United States and China. This rivalry is marked by export restrictions on semiconductors classified as strategic for military purposes.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, only a very small volume of units has been released so far. Although Chinese companies have obtained specific permits to acquire these components, the extent of future sales still awaits security assessments and complementary approvals.
Jeffrey Kessler, U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, confirmed the first shipments of the H200 during a session of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He stated that exports made to date have been minimal.
The American Department of Commerce reported that approximately ten Chinese companies had already received authorization to purchase the chips in May, but no deliveries had been finalized at that time. Among the approved companies were Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance (responsible for TikTok).

It is not yet determined whether China will permit large-scale purchases of these processors. If access to American chips remains restricted, Chinese companies may opt for domestically developed solutions, which are considered less advanced for training artificial intelligence systems.
