Kgagu Smith, a player for the Springboks, sustained a knee injury that rules him out for the 2026 season. Despite this, the two-time World Cup winner has supported the younger generation of the Springboks, expressing optimism ahead of the historic tour against the All Blacks.
Speaking in Johannesburg at the official launch of this landmark 2026 tour, Smith, who is currently on the injury list, stated that the intense internal battle within the Springboks is the main driver of the team's continuous success.
Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus is successfully rotating the squad without losing competitive level or results. New faces have integrated easily into the system; for instance, debutant flanker Paul de Villiers has made a significant impact on the blind side in the absence of experienced players like Smith.
Erasmus's team demonstrated an ideal start to the Nations Championship campaign, securing victories over England and Scotland in the first two matches despite major changes in the squad. Ahead of the upcoming match against Wales in Durban, the tactical genius once again decided to implement a full rotation, and 20-year-old former Springboks junior midfielder Wusi Moyo is preparing for his long-awaited first test start.
Smith shared his thoughts on the evolution of the squad, noting: 'This has been built up over a long time. It is clear that the new generation is reaching a high level, but I think Rassie [Erasmus] tries to maintain interest and keep this competition alive.'
He added that the young players are showing exceptional results, and he is happy to be in an environment where they constantly challenge each other.
He emphasized that realizing there will be an opportunity at some point requires taking it, as the next player is already waiting their turn. Smith noted that while injured, he is genuinely pleased with the young players' successes. Upon his return, he understands that he must be in peak condition to have a chance to come back into the team, which, in his opinion, motivates the player to achieve the absolute maximum.
